Can this only be done by the routes given online or is there evidence of some changes that can be made when booking on the phone?

Word of warning: I just tried to book an award for SIN-BKK on SQ in Business Class. There is partner inventory in "I" for the first three flights of the day (checked with ANA and Lifemiles) and the Elevate agent couldn't see those flights. I e-mailed Virgin Elevate with my request and tried again: same answer, no inventory...

In theory this is possible. Unlike Virgin Atlantic, aircraft type on partner rewards are not restricted. But in practice, you're unlikely to find suitable availability via VX elevate points.

SQ does not release their A380/77W C/F award space to partners. You will have to use KrisFlyer if you want to book those.
