I currently have the Commenity card. Any reason why I should not wait to sign up for the BofA Alaska card?
I'm keeping my Commenity card for 1.3 points per spend until 12/31/17. Then I'll consider what options come from Alaska/VX or the bank. I'll most likely get ride of the card at that time (although there are some VX perks I like). If I didn't already have the BofA card I would certainly get it with the current promotion. We use the certificate(s) every year, including now on VX flights. You can always cancel the Commenity card if you don't like it's offering later on. |
Virgin America CC is closing.
I just received this email from Virgin America, I am a Comenity CC holder.
As a valued Virgin America Visa® or Virgin America Premium Visa® Credit cardholder, we want to ensure that you’re informed about important changes to your account. On January 1, 2018 Alaska Mileage PlanTM will replace Virgin America ElevateTM and become the sole loyalty program for Virgin America. Along with the upcoming close of Elevate, the rewards and benefits tied to your Virgin America Visa credit card, issued by Comenity Capital Bank, will end on December 31, 2017 and your account will be closed on January 4, 2018. Your card will not convert to an Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® card, however you may apply for one at any time. If you have a balance on your Virgin America Visa Credit card account after the program ends: You will receive monthly billing statements until the balance is paid in full. The terms of your account, as stated in your Credit Card Agreement, will apply until your balance is paid in full. You will continue to have access to your Account Center, where you can view your account and make online payments. Please see the letter mailed to you and visit the Frequently Asked Questions for more information on how this impacts your card benefits and account. For additional questions, we encourage you to reach out to Comenity Capital Bank representatives and Elevate program specialists at the following numbers. Comenity Capital Bank: 1-855-871-9842 (TDD/TTY: 1-888-819-1918) Elevate/Card benefits: 1-877-FLY-VIRGIN (877-359-8474) Even though the Virgin America credit card program is coming to an end, you have an opportunity to keep up the good perks by applying for the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® card, which offers many familiar perks, across both airlines. Thank you, - Virgin America |
The credit cards are shutting down, I just got an email from VX.

No surprise at all that it is closing down as Comenity has no realistic alternative product to offer. AS is winding down everything Virgin so no reason to keep it.

Thank you, - Virgin America I got the same note above, but mine was followed by the details of the offer: Get set for a rewarding experience with the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® card, including: * Alaska's Famous Companion FareTM for a limited time, buy one ticket, get one for just the taxes and fees after you spend $1,000 or more in purchases within the first 90 days of opening your account. * 30,000 bonus miles after you spend $1,000 or more in purchases within 90 days of opening your account. * First checked bag free on Alaska and Virgin America flights for you and up to six other passengers on the same reservation. * Earn 3 miles for every $1 spent directly on Alaska Airlines and Virgin America purchases and 1 mile for every $1 spent on all other purchases. * Low annual fee of $75† * Low introductory APR offer on balance transfers† There are two types of cards: the Visa Signature® card and the Platinum Plus® card. The card you receive will be determined by several factors including your income and credit history. The benefits and bonus miles above apply to Visa Signature cards only. The Annual Fees, benefits and bonus miles for Platinum Plus® cards are different. For more information on the differences, see the Features section accompanying the application. |
The VX Visa credit card closing is disappointing, but it was completely expected. The answer to this question is probably already answered somewhere, but I figured it would be very easy for someone who knows to give me a response: Does the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature card grant holders early boarding on Virgin America (similar to the way VX Visa cardholders are allowed early boarding)? Thanks in advance.

I got the email as well. My question is if they will partially refund the annual fee since they are closing the card before my card year is up.

https://www.virginamerica.com/cms/el...evate_171002_c Will I be credited for my annual fee? You will receive a prorated refund of your annual fee in the form of a statement credit 1-2 billing cycles after account closure. The prorated refund will be based on the number of days the account was open before program benefits end on 12/31/17. If you voluntarily close your account prior to 12/31/17, your prorated refund will be based on the number of days the account was open until the date of closure.

Anyone know if it's possible to product change to a no-AF Comenity card to preserve credit history? I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere.
|
For what it is worth, Bank of America won't clear any sign-up bonuses for several billing periods. Just something to manage for folks who hope that the card will let them buy a BOGO holiday ticket, or use the points. N.B. this is not part of their advertisement.

Will points we earn between our December statement date on 1/1/2018 still be credited? I'm hoping to get the 15k status points via the Premium card and will be cutting it close this year.

I would say do some sort of MS (maybe buy a block of bitcoins and then immediately dump them on an exchange) and eat the 3-4% fee if status is on the line and you think it's worthwhile.
