Looks like my monthly trip to SFO is going to get cheaper/easier.

Half the time I fly SFO-DFW my seatmate is usually a Silicon Valley techie going to Austin, making a connection @ DFW. They love the wi-fi and tend to avoid AA & SWA if they can.

Alaska and other Airlines have tried this route... it's not a money maker...
FYI: Austin is in Texas not far from Dallas... heavy AA elite territory, they are not going to jump ship. I fly AA weekly... sorry most on the plane are not headed to Austin.

I agree. I posted half the time my seatmate is a techie connecting to Austin, but I never posted most on the plane were headed to Austin. Most of the passengers I've met on VX aren't FF's either, so we have options since we're never going to have to worry about miles or upgrades.

The real competition is United, which flies SFO-AUS multiple times daily, now even with some mainline planes. I don't know why VX keeps choosing routes dominated by another airline...

Now if only they would come to the Houston market. They can't get there fast enough......

Then Sir Richard can free us from Jeff's prison.....err, fortress hub at IAH.

I have done that AUS-SFO route on those cheap, 70-seat SkyWest puddle jumpers. Positively terrible flight. Fly VX, or any other carrier, instead of that flight from AUS to the SFO market.

4 hours locked inside a SkyWest bucket? That's 4 hours of pure torture.

UA will soon have 6 daily SFO-AUS flights, 2x mainline, 4x RJ.
No doubt meant to fight VX.

+1

The CRJs United does SFO-AUS are horrible. It's not an appropriate service between these two stations given all the tech flyers, and the service onboard is horrible. I was 1K Million Miler doing that route, and felt like cattle.

I was so excited to hear that VX is now taking the route on. It won't snag many flyers based in AUS, but it will definitely make a lot of VX people in SF happy. One more station I can list when people tell me "but Virgin doesn't fly to enough cities."

As SFOPhD noted, UA is responding with a major show of force in the form of increased frequencies and some upgagues to mainline. If they successfully push VX out of AUS, expect fares to shoot back up and frequencies to reduce again, with CR7s only.
