Virgin America trying to get DCA perimeter rule exemption

My interview with VX CEO David Cush about the airline trying to get the slots to fly into DCA.

Call your local Congress person if you want to help them out.

I don't think contacting a Congressman is going to help VX's effort. It isn't Congress who awards the slots after the application process, it is the Department of Transportation. (And the fact that Cush doesn't seem to understand that makes me wonder what else about the process he doesn't understand).

One can bet the Bay Area Congressional delegations have and will weigh in on this through DOT's process. But does Mr. Cush not realize that citizens can make comments DIRECTLY to DOT, the same DOT that is making the decision? If you want to show your support for VX service -- particularly if you think they warrant slots for 2 flights -- send your comments via the DOT Docket Process.

Of course politics plays into it!!!

The DOT is not immune to pressure from the white house or anyone else that holds sway over their budget or numerous other levers.

Well, yes. But you missed the point, I think. Members (and even whole delegations) will be lobbying DOT for their interest. The comment to the docket process allows people to put their $0.02 into the ring. Look up the docket, the robo-emails from one carrier are all being recorded as public comments......

Question for the VeXperts: If VX gets DCA slots, will they pull IAD-SFO frequencies, or will they keep IAD the same and add the DCA flights?

No, I think they will kept those. Does not have change the frequencies. IAD-SFO is here to stay. They aren't leaving from IAD in a distant the future.

VX would have a lot to lose if they left IAD. Why?

1. Their gates are at Concourse B, which is the better airside terminal at IAD
2. Their gates are the closest to the Aerotrain
3. There is VS Clubhouse access in the same Concourse
4. VX still captures a good market share as a competitor to other carriers serving IAD

Going to DCA would expand VX's market, and not replace one market for another.

VX won its DCA slot. Exciting to see that UA will have competition on the SFO route. ^
