Leaving the airport at connecting city?

I have a flight from Dubai to Philadelphia. The flight connects via Newark Liberty Airport. I'm also an American citizen. Can I simply leave at Newark? I'd rather rent a car from Newark than wait 3 hours for a 1 hour flight.

Also, if I have a ticket from Philadelphia to Dubai via Newark, can I get on the plane in Newark instead? My whys aren't important, I'm only interested in if I can. Thanks for your time.

WRT just leaving at EWR, you can but if the ticket is a round trip DXB-PHL, they will likely cancel the remaining segments if you skip the leg to PHL.

Common practice in the airline industry is to cancel all remaining segments on a ticket if one segment is not flown. So if you are booked PHL-EWR-DXB on a single ticket and do not fly the PHL-EWR segment, there is a high likelihood that your EWR-DXB segment will be cancelled, and you will be denied boarding at EWR. This is one way that the airlines discourage travelers from utilizing hidden-city ticketing, where the fare for AAA-BBB-CCC might actually be less than the fare for BBB-CCC alone.

In case you were unaware of it, your other option -- if you opt not to fly the EWR-PHL leg -- is Amtrak, which offers service from EWR Airport Rail Station to Philadelphia 30th Street Station.
The train takes just over an hour.

Assuming youre booked in a round trip, I would try checking to see if youre able to change the booking to end in EWR if thats what youre looking to do and not try to skip that segment without arranging it with the airline first.
