Entering the USA on F1 visa with expiring passport

A friend has just flown home from the US at short notice for a funeral. They realised as they boarded that their passport (China) expires mid-April. They have an F1 visa. Based on the below I believe they cannot re-enter the USA until they renew their passport; is this correct?

Mainland Chinese will need a passport with >6 months validity, otherwise they will most likely be denied boarding in China when the check-in agent reviews the documents.

The visa in the existing passport can still be used, just carry both together.

Thanks. They've taken my advice and are getting a new passport fast-track while there.
