Arriving in US with a separate return ticket
 

For reasons of mileage availability, I am looking at flying into the US on BA and home on KL. This obviously means two one-way tickets. Will US Immigration know my flight plans for the return, or will I have to carry proof that I have a ticket out of the country!?

but never asked for any proof of exit plans!

+1. I've never been asked for proof of onward flight either by BA or immigration despite having gone in on a one way several times. A print off of your return itinerary should be enough if you are asked.

Was asked for proof of onward travel plans flying LIM-MIA at checking by AA. When they saw my next day booking with BA MIA-LHR they were happy to check me in and let me travel... Showed the printout from BA all was ok

I haven't been asked by immigration, but I have been asked by an airline for proof of onwards travel. FI in KEF wouldn't let me check in online because of it, but the return booking on the BA app on my phone was enough to satisfy the people on the checkin desk.

You are more likely to get a hard time from your air carrier than from CBP. But, either way, neither could care less what your onward travel arrangements are, simply that you have them in hand.

A print out of the e-ticket receipt (showing the actual e-ticket number as opposed to PNR) will satisfy even the most persnickety.
