US passport name change

guys

Does anybody know if the state dept returns all original documents that you send them? I had sent them a notarized copy but it seems they are asking for a certified copy. Since that would take time, I'm thinking of simply sending them the original but obviously would like to get it back

Thx

Yes - I had to send my original birth certificate in (adoption issues) and I got it back in a separate, unmarked brown envelope. This was a few years back, but I assume it's the same now.

I just did a name change (slight) in April and everything came back (birth certificate, marriage license, old passport)

did you guys have any issues with the photo? They are telling me my photo is more than 6 months old and I don't understand it since I took it the day before sending the application off

I just did a renewal and name change this summer, and I got all my documents back. They were mailed separately. I don't know what to say about the photo, I didn't have any trouble there.
