Just to clarify...
If I travel on a flight that's less than 500 miles on US, I only get the "actual" miles flown.
If I travel on a flight that's less than 500 miles on UA but credit it to my DM miles account, would I get the full 500 per segment or again just the "actual" miles?

Welcome to FlyerTalk, jamesgbbc
Yes, you'd get "actual" miles flown on both US and its partner airlines, including UA, when crediting to DM account.

Can anyone suggest some good routings out of New York to build up flight segments pretty quickly - or about 6,000 miles cheaply?

Check out the Mileage Run Deals section where FlyerTalkers post their "finds" . I'm not a segment runner, but if you're into mileage, a creative roundtrip transcon would get you close to 6,000.

CO Reinstates 500 Min Mile Guarantee for Elites
It's been posted elsewhere here, but I thought I'd post to this relevant thread for those who may have it bookmarked: CO is bringing back the 500 minimum mile guarantee for CO elites only, according to CO Insider:
Feedback Received: 500-Mile Minimum Restored for Elite Members
Here's hoping US sees the light, although I'm not holding my breath.
