US/AA 550 (PHX-BOS) diverted to SYR, pilot passes away in flight

Saw this in my Twitter feed and a couple of other blogs.

Sad if it's true :(

Edit: not doubting the story, I usually don't follow American Airlines and don't know how to check up on this.

Looks like it was a PHX-BOS flight diverted to SYR, according to FlightAware.

As this is a US flight, I'll move to the US forum.

Thanks.

Sad.

One article claims that a flight attendant/nurse attempted to revive.

I got scared for a second as I flew AA550 ONT-PHX last night, I am not sure if the same crew worked the PHX-BOS flight (even though the flight number was the same - my plane went to MSP, so probably not), but it has to be a harrowing experience for everybody involved.

Sending my thoughts to the pilot and his family.

AA Pilot dies during flight

Per CNN:

Breaking News
An American Airlines captain died during a flight from Phoenix to Boston, and the co-pilot landed the plane with 147 passengers safely, an airline official said
AA550 - diverted to Syracuse, perhaps?

You beat me to it

I just saw the news and went to post it when I saw that you beat me to it.

My condolences to the family.

FAA1996 Oct 5, 2015 10:58 am

Sad news, but I think it's pmUS flight.

cmd320 Oct 5, 2015 11:02 am

Condolences for sure, this does sadly happen from time to time. That's got to be a tough position to be in for the FO afterward.

xSTRIKEx6864 Oct 5, 2015 11:03 am

Why is this moved to the US forum? The media is reporting it was an American Airlines flight and WBZ took a photo of the plane after it landed and it is painted in AA livery.

Either way, sad story, but at least everyone aside from the pilot landed safely.

SFOPhD Oct 5, 2015 11:03 am

Condolences and thoughts to those who knew the pilot.

Madone59 Oct 5, 2015 11:14 am

How awful. Thoughts and prayers with the pilots family. Hopefully the crew helped the passengers stay calm, this would be unnerving to experience.

Yeah, that is one. They diverted to SYR. I cannot not believe that. I am so sad that captain has passed away. My condolences to the families.

The CNN article says it was from illness. In my mind, "illness" is a preexisting condition, and isn't something like heart attack, poisoning, etc. So - I have to wonder - how did he go from being fit to fly to dead in what was probably 3-4 hours?
