Wow - a visit to the wayback machine

Here's a video of an old US 727-200 flight CLT-SFO.

Takeoff ex Rwy 36L. Quite the roll to get airborne.

Smoking permitted only in the smoking section only (and only in your seat).

Complimentary dinner.

Love the old 727-200 roar....

Recorded in Sept 1989 so had to be a camcorder. I think that PI had a pilot named Mullis. Unfortunately all the seniority lists from back then are on paper.

Crazy. I didn't realize the 727 had the legs to make it all the way across the country. And how hideous was that cabin? Funny how despite some things changing drastically, like the smoking, others are pretty similar to today - the FA and captain announcements could've been recorded yesterday (for the most part), for example.

Thanks for the find!

If they were really cutting edge in 1989, it would have been Hi8!

Nice. I loved those 727 wings and all the flaps and surface that moved.

In the PI days, wine with the meal on transcons and headsets were free in coach.

<sarcasm>

And how was the plane able to take off with an electronic device powered on? Wouldn't it have interfered with the navigation??

The very first US Air plane I ever saw was a 727 landing at SFO in the early 80's. US was new to the west coast at the time. I managed to fly on a few before they retired them (in addition to US Shuttle ones). I think the F cabin had 3 rows on one side and two rows on the other. I used to love the "slow and low" take-offs of the 727. The complete opposite of the 757.

Low - yes, slow - not quite, going like a bat out of hell would be more like it. What I remember is throwing V1 out the window and picking a spot about 3,000' from the far end of the runway to bend the thrust levers forward as the go/no-go point because there was no way you'd stop on the runway at V1. Plus, just like DEN in the summer, rotating the nose and still rolling on the mains until the end of the runway disappeared below the nose.

Is there any commercial airline that flies these anymore? I know no one in North America doe but I've always wanted to fly in one of these.

There may be some operated by small 3rd world carriers. Some small cargo operators may still be flying some in this country. 3rd world military/government may also operate a few here and there.

When did US ban smoking on domestic flights? I assume that it was prior to Congress banning smoking and am guessing it had to be within months of when this video was shot?

IIRC, most airlines didn't ban smoking on international flights until well into the mid 90s.

Edited:
Looks like I can answer my own question. Two months later smoking was banned on flights of six hours or less:
