More data points from family and colleagues:
100% bonus - purchased miles twice within the past year
50% bonus - purchased miles once within the past year
50% bonus - never purchased miles
25% bonus - purchase miles once within the past year
Don't think the miles are based on status, miles purchased or miles flown as the owners of all the listed accounts fly similar routes, and do not have status with US as it is not used as the mile earning program for any of us

I think it really is a random algorithm...
Data point:
Acct 1: silver pref, usmc, never purchased miles before, shared once during gs11 = 50% bonus
Acct 2: no status, usmc, never purchased miles before, never shared = 100% bonus

Checked mine, showing 100% bonus for either "buy" or "gift". I did not buy US DMs last year, but received a 50k + 50k (100% bonus) transfer from another family member's account.
--- Just check the family member's account, it shows only 75% bonus despite it was the one initiated the transfer last year. I have to agree with the other posts that this is randomly generated.
Got to decide whether I should to get the 100k now, to potentially use it as AA miles.

I received 75%. I am Chairman, and never have purchased miles before. I agree there is no correlation.

Bought Miles once in Sept 2011, never set foot on a US plane or credited anything to the US FF program, got 50%... Too bad, as I was looking forward to the next 100 % bonus.

Could it be random every time you check one acct too? Or is the level fixed for each acct?

I got the K Mart mark down of 25%.
My wife would get 75%.

Of course, this assumes miles will eventually be converted into AA 1:1.

gift miles to multiple accounts
That's also what I understand. Is there anyone who tried to gift miles to multiple accounts?
Can a 100% bonus account gift the the 50+50k miles to several accounts? The T&C only says that you will *receive* a maximum of 50k bonus miles in one account.
