I can add another tale of CA failing to give a ####.
My friends were on a US ticket MEL-PVG overnight stop PVG-NRT-JFK.
There were weather issues at PVG and surprisingly the A332 had fuel to divert to PEK. My friends recount a tale of woe spanning 3 hours trying to seek resolution to be met with shoulder shrugging and zero attempt at rebooking. As I understand it CA then prepared them a fake PNR to allow them to leave the airport without a visa! They were packed off to a hotel with no idea what to do next.
Ultimately they called US and begged for assistance - US came to the party and rebooked them PEK - NRT to meet their JFK flight.
