Update 08APR2014: Star Alliance Awards must have been booked by March 30, 2014. They are no longer available through US. This thread is mostly useful for historic purposes, and discussing issues such as schedule changes/route changes that affect FTers existing *A awards booked before 3/31/2014.

Discussion on using US miles to book oneworld awards is available here.

If you are looking for discussion on US's new partner awards that use various partners not in oneworld (many of whom are former *A partners), see the devoted thread on using US miles to book NON-oneworld partners here.

------------------------

Update 07JAN14: American Airlines award tickets bookable online on usairways.com or through reservation.

  • Award travel must be wholly on American Airlines or a combination of American Airlines and US Airways.
  • American Airlines awards cannot be combined with any of our current partner.
  • American Airlines award travel chart (PDF)

Please see the devoted thread on using US miles to book AA here.

That's a totally baseless speculation since we don't know the outcome of the merger and there's been zero discussion of what will happen if it's blocked.

That's why I said "may", "if", & "appears".

Oct. 31st date is all we have to go on at the moment anyhow..

They can't do anything until the DOJ trial is resolved. OCT 31 is clearly not happening and with a late nov trial date likely we won't see this resolved till Q1-Q2 of next yr. To say it appears is totally baseless as the uncertainty factor is very very high
Cheers

Sure they could. They could leave *A and join OW. Even if the merger was blocked they could partner with AA, BA, CX, etc. The DOJ blocking the merger doesn't force them to stay in their current business relationships if they choose to go elsewhere.

Clearly if the merger goes and US joins oneworld, award bookings would soon cease, but if i were to book a star award for sometime in 2014 at the present, that would be ticketed and immune from merger fluctuations, right?

Until there is a schedule change or cancelled flight...

It has been covered in this thread, but here is the thread on a *A booking flown after BMI-BA merger http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/bmi-d...tion-trip.html

UA.com does tend to miscode 777-300A flights as 777-300ER. Also DXB is switching from the former to the latter and award space may not have been zeroed out yet. Either way, what you can see on UA.com should be bookable via US.

Call again. You haven't even attempted to book a US award until you finish your third call.

It is well-known that each USDM agent has his or her rule and *A availability.

Their motto is call us again as many times as possible.

Welcome to the wheels of fortune.

That is not always true regarding "IRROPS-only" assistance. I left my passport behind this summer and went to check in at the LH counter in Miami realizing it was no longer in my bag and was instead at the in-laws 4.5 hours away. The ticket counter agent was able to move us to the next day's flight. (We were traveling on 037 ticket stock.)

Has anyone had success recently moving changing the class of service from coach to business on an award ticket?

When I booked my award about a month ago I had to settle for coach on my transpacific leg on Air China. The agent who booked my ticket said I could call back later and move up, if business class seats opened up on that flight -- which did happen recently.

But now when I call to make the change, I keep getting the response that to do that, the award has to be cancelled and reissued. The other legs aren't showing availability anymore, so there's no way I'm taking the chance! Blog posts suggest that this can be done, but having been shot down nicely by 3 agents already, I figure I'd check here first to see if the policy has changed....
