Don't listen to them. It is a magical place for the truly elite! But until you are 1k, I can tell you no more....

Bleh! I used to go on there at least 5 times a week to see what "1K only offers" they had available. They dumped that years ago. Even when it was available, it was only for those "lucky" enough to fly out of SFO/DEN/ORD. They never had any "offers" for the unlucky souls at IAD. I haven't seen the need to go on that site for well over 18 months.
Nothing to see here folks...

The only useful bit the 1K site has is a very nice summary of contact numbers and rule/fee exemptions that are applicable. I agree it used to be more useful. It's a bit like getting excited to get into OMNI on FT. Not quite sure what the point is/was.

I agree, i.d. Prestonh (#7). I achieved 1k today (thanks to Flyertalk!). The only useful item on the 1K webpage is the list of toll-free contact telephone numbers. In the UK we have to pay to telephone United, unlike customers who call from USA.

... and I don't understand why - they should be using it for surveys, for giving out coupons to get 1k friends to fly UA, for advertising new services, you name it - but they don't - it is hyped and delivers pretty much nothing. Now, the 1k desk - that's another story - the people are great.
the other thing that 1ks end up doing is acting as free travel agents for UA. At least I do. They should give us some kind of mileage or other perk for doing this - we are much more efficient at booking than the average Joe Schmo - and we don't waste agents' time asking stupid questions. Also we book UA and not someone else. Travelocity don't do that for them. I think I should ask United for a job - there seems to be no imagination used on utilizing 1ks to go out and sell for them.

As a first-day 1K, I must say that I am unimpressed with the 1K website. I was very pleased, though, with my first contact with the 1K desk - managed a complicated international award booking (I'd been waiting to make 1K to waive the fees), made an upgrade request that couldn't be done on-line for a MP Visa companion certificate booking, and even was able to get a couple of electronic codes for Elite Choice RCC entry (I forgot to print them out when I selected the RCC passes after crossing the 75K EQM barrier). Life is good! ^
