are refunds for "V" booking class possible?
Hi There,
I have a question for those here at the UMP forum. I have a ticket for HKG-SGN-HKG, but I need to cancel it. I purchased the ticket online. On my itinerary, it says have a V booking class in economy. I spoke to a United agent 3 days ago and he said that I can cancel this booking with a $38 fee then I get a refund (credited to the original form of payment). I was not sure if I had to really cancel it then, so I did not cancel the flight. When I called them back today because I need to cancel, but this time the agent said I cannot cancel to get a refund but can only have it as a credit for a future booking. Can someone please help me out here? Not sure what the real deal is for the V booking class. I don't mind getting a credit for a future flight, but was wondering who among the 2 agents was correct. Thanks! |
you can get a "refund" if cancelled within 24 hours of booking, otherwise you will get a credit toward future booking less the change fee (which is likely to be $250 or so for an international ticket -- but you need to check the specific fare rules)

Thanks for the reply WineCountryUA. I paid $288 Canadian dollars for that ticket. I guess in the fare rules it said there was a penalty of 280 HKD for canceling (so that is like $38 Canadian dollars). After the penalty, I have $250 Canadian dollars in credit with United. Basically, this credit will just go to a "change fee"? Oh well. I'll try booking with them in the near future, and see how far this "credit" will take me. LOL.

Incorrect, since you didn't cancel within 24 hours of booking, you are now left with $288 minus $250 (change fee), which means you left with $38

If that is true, then....sigh :( . I'll check the fare rules again.

OP, just knowing that your ticket is V class is not enough information. The fare rules depend on the fare basis, not just the code. Just call and ask again. |
You can get a full refund if there should be a significant-enough schedule change in the future. @:-)

Incorrect. The change penalty depends on the fare rules of the ticket. While $250 is common for ex-US tickets, tickets from other origins have widely differing penalties.

I would wait until the departure date nears and see if there is a schedule change. I do believe that a V fare for an intl ticket has a $250 change fee in the currency that the ticker was purchassed in. It never hurts to stop by a UA ticket counter and get a print out of the rules of your fare.
