SYD-MEL tag to be added in December
It's not in Apollo yet so I have been waiting to say anything, but I understand that either the SFO-SYD or LAX-SYD flight will continue to MEL. I have no information regarding whether the LAX-AKL-MEL flight will indeed also continue to MEL...I suspect this has much to do with the current struggles of Ansett...
More info when I get it...

Perfect! Just what I needed as I plan on going to MEL in January to catch some of the Australian Open. What would even be nicer is if it allows for a couple day layover in Sydney too!

Interesting. Perhaps AKL will now continue on to BNE.
What I have noticed on my many trips to SYD is that lots of people flew UA to SYD and then AN to MEL -- faster than taking UA through AKL because AKL isn't really a direct way to MEL.
I think having AKL-MEL and SYD-MEL would be redundant.

But I do like the idea a lot... maybe one of the flights can go to MEL and the other could goto BNE... adding both destinations from their two daily SYD flights.
Then there is yet another option to consider... it's possible the flight that continues to MEL could go home straight from MEL... turing SYD-LAX non stop (or SYD/SFO) into SYD-MEL-LAX... good for Melbourners looking for a non stop to the US, bad for Sydnesiders. This is conceivable given they may not want to pay landing fees in Sydney twice.
Still whatever way it changes it sounds to me like a good change, and my several times a year trips to Sydney never include Melbourne... but still I like it.

UA862 MEL-SYD-SFO. UA841/842 stay the same.

Thanks for that UAL Emp, and thank goodness that 841/842 are still alive!

Now that the MEL connections are fixed .I hope Brisbane is next. The current arrangement with Qantas to/from Sydney leaves much to be desired.I accept that BNE has far less commercial traffic than MEL but UA is currently the only carrier "surcharging"Brisbane passengers for the BNE_SYD_BNE connection on the way to the USA.

What arrangement with Qantas? When I tried to find UA flights from BNE to the US they didn't exist in the system. It seemed to me that I was left with making my own way to SYD

The arrangement that I referred to was the deal where UA would carry the cost of the BNE/SYD conx on QF as long as the booking was made prior to 13/01/01 or thereabouts.New bookings no longer cover this. Air Canada has flights out of SYD to North America and they are currently paying QF themselves for the BNE-SYD sectors.
The problem with the QF transfers is that although your baggage can be interlined to the US (unlike Virgin),the actual check-in process for United is done at the Sydney International Terminal. One plus for Qantas has been the refreshing on time departures and arrivals compared to Ansett I.

OH, how this would have been nice for my trip over next week
I traditionally fly into MEL all the time (though not next week- "0" award seats in C or F), and have to route via LAX and AKL, so this will work really good for me, and get me there a few hours earlier I imagine.

My mail says UA has traffic rights SYD-MEL-SYD and that UA will sell that sector as a standalone freely, starting off with a big discount blast to pack those 747s which right now have zero pax booked. Not sure if SFO-SYD crew will be 'illegal' if they carry on to MEL, and that will be an interesting cost/staffing question Basenji might know about? 2 hours on ground in SYD makes it a 17 hour type shift, even for the 2 crews loaded now.
Look for an inaugural $A99 r.t fare first up. (And triple miles on that too for 1P/1K.)

This is also good news if you want to visit both cities on an award ticket. As it stands now, you have to fly LAXorSFO-SYD and then MEL-AKL-LAX, and as such have to find your own way of getting between SYD-MEL. With this new routing, you can book MEL as your final destination with a stopover in SYD.
