The 727 era at UAL comes to an end
At 938pm PT tonight, UA 1639 landed at Oakland airport, marking the last commercial revenue service by a Boeing 727 for United Airlines.

I got back from OAK about an hour ago...
Sad event, made me feel very nostalgic.
I spoke with OAK airport officials; here's what they said about their stance on spotters: "we're not too accomodating..."
Goodbye, old friend!

I recall flying out of Oakland years ago on the short stubby version of 727 (TWA to STL). That plane just jumped off the runway. I mentioned that to the pilot on the way off the plane in STL and he grinned and told me how much fun that plane was to fly... plenty of power.
I really liked the plane as long as I wasn't sitting near the engines, it was very quiet up front. It probably wasn't a true worldshrinker on par with 707 and 747 but it was a great airplane, with great lines, and I'll miss it too

It was nice to board a 727 and see 3 people on the flight deck.

If you guys get misty-eyed for the old 727, don't worry too much; Northwest will probably be flying them through 2040.

The 727 is my all-time favorite airplane. With UA's 727 retirement, I now have one less reason to fly UA. But there are still other reasons, and they easily outnumber NWA even with their 727's!

Mileage:
In 2040, after all the lucky souls that got to take part in the last ride on the NW 727 are done, they will then be able to go to back to where they came from on a NW DC-9-32 that will be in use until 2055...

I saw a UA 727 at ATL a week ago. Is that one gone too?

Stimpy,
All of UA's 727s are supposed to be retired as of today.

Back in 1994 (or was it 1993..I"m not at home so I can't check my records), I was invited to fly the last revenue passenger flight of UAL's 727-22.
The last "stubby" flew SFO-LAS and was a very uneventful flight.
Capatain made an announcement, but ogther than flying the last stubby, it was what you might say...uneventful...at best.

Hi all, I don't know much about the 727, but I think that's what they use to fly from DEN-ATL, which i really hate because the flight time is 2 1/2 hours (sometimes more) , and this plane has NO TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now the next step would be retiring 737 so UA will start using planes with TV between DEN-ATL.

Exactly! For heaven's sake, TV on a 2 or 3 hour flight?
Personally, I choose UA 737's instead of Airbus. I don't want to watch TV or a movie on an airplane. I also like aircraft that fly where they're supposed to (my brother, an air traffic controller of 10 years, says Airbus planes drift off course).

Now UA starts paying the pilots for a minimum of six months for not flying. Good move Goodwin. It will take longer then six months to recertify the pilots for other aircraft and they cannot be layoff.
The 272 are paid for, your paying all of the pilots why not make some money.
