How many elites?

Flyertalk is awesome, but sometimes I think a bit jaded. If you read through the blogs and posts, it seems like everyone here is a 1k, or GS, yet when I fly even on international, I rarely see more than one or two GS and only a handful of 1k's - SFO flights, of course being a big exception to the rule. The lists are even thinner these days. On my last flight to ICN, I was the only 1k Upstairs (I asked the FA, who scanned the list for me).

I was looking through the posts, and all I could find was a post from back in 1998 saying there were only about 7000 1k's and a lot of 1p's This number seems terribly low. Anyone have a slight insight into the general Range of how many 1k's, GS, and 1p's there are out there these days? Just curious mostly...

Here's the old thread I found, in case anyone is interested in the past...

While we don't know the current level, here is a breakdown of the elite population as of 2004.

In 2005 these numbers (from Randy?) were floating about and are listed on Wikipedia (United has steadfastly declined to released numbers -- again in recent USA Today interviews)

2P 535K members
1P 239K members
1K 46K members
GS 18K members

There have been multiple previous threads on this
(And Lucky has posted one of those)

I have also noticed a thinning of the ranks. JFK-SFO, DEN-LGA, IAH. The elite ranks on ORD-LGA however, remain consistent.

Out of curiosity, why are there so many 1k/GS in SFO? More so that the other hubs?

United's presence in SFO is unmatched. Even in a place like ORD, AA has a very strong presence which splits off the business crowd. In SFO it is hard to justify any other carrier if you are a business traveler and really need the worldwide the service UA has to offer.

I was on 54 SFO-ORD yesterday morning and GA announced there are 150 2Ps so group 1 boarding will be "a little longer".

What is it, 15 per screen? I've seen some crazy numbers on both the upgrade and standby list at SFO as well as LAX.
