All 4 trips this year have been affected by mechanicals
3 of which resulted in cancelled flights or missed connections.
Have I just been unlucky or is this in line with other's experiences?

3/17 (18%) of my UA flights have arrived late this year (all mechanical).

I have experienced three consecutive UA trips where mechanical delays caused misconnections and involuntary re-routings. As a result, I've sampled QF once, DL once, and F9 twice.

1 of 12 flights in 2009, so far, has departed or arrived more than 30 minutes off schedule. Only one time have transitted ORD and neither was delayed.

Try 3 (three) in one day!
Now that was bad luck.
But I got to my destination in the end.....

I guess in terms of segments it is 4 mechanicals out of 20.

I must be lucky. Only 1/24 segments this year have arrived more than a couple minutes late, and every segment involved ORD. The 1 segment was due to a flat tire which was changed and resulted in only a 40-minute departure delay, some of which was made up in the air.
Now, delayed bags on the other hand.........................

Were your cancellations on UA or UAX flights? WB or NB flights? I think WB flights are more likely to have a cancellation since A. ETOPS requirements are much more stringent than domestic operations and B. if a 777 goes down for a mechanical, there usually isn't another 777 just sitting around, or that can be swapped out, like you can with an airbus or 757.

10 segments so far in 2009, not a single delay, and IIRC, my last delay on United was hmm a long time ago, and I did 40+ segments last year ^

only 2/30 delays this year - both due to weather and 1 full day cancellation, but UA gets a break considering it was a blizzard.

I had two mechanical delays yesterday, with the cumulative delay causing me to miss my last connection and have to be rebooked on a later flight.
2 hour delay in Denver due to cockpit instrument problems.
2-1/2 delay in Seattle due to engine problems.

Missed connection in Narita by 15 minutes.

34 segments YTD, only a couple delays (ATC into SFO).
Had a couple mechanical < 15 min pushback delays, but time was made up en route.

It's been a couple of years since we've had any kind of significant delay.
