DXB Global Services Tidbit

On my 26 Feb 09 United flight from Dubai to Dulles (DXB-IAD), there was something I had not seen before at the Dubai FC/GS checkin counter: A letter, in a little frame, listing by name the Global Services members on the flight.

Of note, there were 14 GS passengers on the flight.

IDEX (International Defense Exposition) was last week in Abu Dhabi, which likely accounted for some of the passengers.

I'm surprised they would do this - it could be considered an invasion of privacy.

No different than the various other print-outs of customer and status that they leave lying around on any given flight. Or for that matter when Hertz or Avis puts your name on the big board.

What a strange thing to do...?!

Why would anyone else need to know, other than the ground agents and flight attendants? To that end, what useful purpose could displaying a list of the names of GS members to the public possibly serve?

Actually sounds like this was put on display for pax on purpose, for some odd reason. I, for one, would appreciate the :attention:

and rightly so ^. for those that earn it, why not be recognized?

I can certainly understand the privacy concerns on posting these names.

I think the list was more in the line of recognition, than anything else. Gate agent pointed it out as I was checking in. Print was small enough, you had to be within a foot or so to actually read it.

I noticed this when I flew from DXB early this morning - only 4 or 5 names on the list, but I thought it was a nice touch.

I drop to my knees whenever I am aware that I am with a GS. :)

A bit too suggestive.

Avis frequently has my name on a separate sign, "Avis welcomes mr. gleff"

But they forget to also put my space number on the big board. So I have to stand in line at the preferred counter or booth. Finally get to the front and they're like "whaddaya want???" and I kindly, meekly, point to the sign welcoming me "I'd like to know what space my car is in, please."

Then they do a big "oops" that's not the way it was supposed to work....

Sometimes a sign is nice, but a sign is just a sign.

Since there is no published criteria for GS, how can you "earn" it?

It's subjectively given by UA, not earned.

Are those GS folks wearing some sort of "halo" so that you can make sure you are kneeling in the right direction? :)
