Question re multi segment SWUs

Question: When you clear one segment, but not the others, do you hold onto the SWU? How does it work? What if you're wait-listed for the next segment. Isn't it unfair for them to collect it at the outset?

Do you have to clear all segments at initial ticketing? Obviously this could lead to some abuse by keeping the SWU while getting an initial upgrade, but OTOH, it's not fair to collect it when you may need it later.

dr: all details and official rules regarding/answering your question are posted in this thread http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum.../005047-2.html and I even answered there your (this) specific question. Please take the time to read it.

Thanks, I read the thread and posted there first. Sorry for the dup, but the thread seemed to be getting so long that some questions get lost.

Anyway, by way of response, this seems very unfair as it is often unlikely that even a 1k will clear all segments in advance. I'll stop posting here and take it back to the other thread, but you thoughts would be appreciated on how to set up an itinerary to clear all segments initially.

My comments...
Book/ticket early, work with UA M+/1K desk to see if Upgrades are available through, then call, call, call. Pray to appropriate dieties. Make a copy of the SWU, record all the details. In the event the down-line Upgrade does not clear, and depending on the circumstances, you may able to respectfully request a replacement. Avoid NRT-BKK. Y to C is easier than C to F.
