Last Sunday night, I was on one of those domestic 777s with over 300 seats in coach, SFO to ORD. The plane was completely full as the previous two flights to Chicago had cancelled because of bad weather in Chicago. I had one bag that I usually carry on, but as I was late and one of the last to board, I checked my bag at the door to the plane. The best part of this is that United tags your gate-checked bag with a huge orange "priority" tag. And yup, the VERY FIRST bag of the carrousel in Chicago was mine. Here's to gate-checking your bag: no fight for the overhead bins, automatically get an orange priority tag REGARDLESS of status, and then its last on the plane, first bag to the carrousel!!!

It really depends on the airport baggage handlers. At PEK and SIN, it doesn't matter if you have a priority tag or not because the service is so efficient and the bags are usually there after you've walked out of immigration. At HKG, it's 50/50 but that shuttle train followed by the escalators and long walk from the gate to immigration makes it seem like less of a wait. At SFO (domestic or international), you might as well get on the rental car shuttle first and return 30 minutes later after you've picked up your car and then you're wait will only be another 30 mintutes!

Not so sure about HKG. I've had great experiences there. Being an HK ID card holder, I zip thru immigration usually under half a minute. Last time I was there, my SQ F bags were the first to come out. The time before, my UA C bags were with the first batch as well.
Had similar good experiences at SYD. It took AN forever to start the carousel. But once it started, my C bags were also with the batch with priority tags. Overall, I can't say I've had a bad priority experience on international flights. SIN HKG SYD NRT LAX were all good. |
In September, when flying UA from TPE to SFO in the Cattle Car (Coach) I was expecting the long wait for my bags too. However, being a PE, my bags were tagged with the orange priority tags. After I cleared immigration, (I cleared within 5 minutes of walking off the plane) I found my way to the baggage retrieval.
My luggage was the firt off the plane, and I cleared the whole process in 7 minutes from walking off the plane! I was speechless! My trip of last week from BKK to SEA was not as good. It was about 12 minutes from the time the luggage began 'coming around' to the time mine was spotted. |
Arriving at SFO international terminal with priority tags, my baggage has ALWAYS been out in the first 10-20%. Any other airport, well.......

My flights are mainly It'l, but almost never are bags off other than in first 10% or so.

My "UNITED FIRST" tagged bag came off third at SEL last night, after two other "UNITED FIRST" tagged bags.
Shame the flight was delayed by 1 hour!!! |
