There was some discussion of this at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum50/HTML/000396.html but I think the travelmall link is now dead.

First class upgrade is NF on UA not X. NC for business upgrade.

IMHO, B, M, H, Q, V, and W are just different codes for managing inventory. Only distinction is that Y, B, M, and H are upgradeable with miles internationally.

As I recall I and X are the classes which must be available to be upgraded, your ticket then shows NC or NF.

B is also considered a full fare economy ticket thus is fully refundable and changeable. In strange terms it is a discount full fare economy.

XF = First class award; XC = Business class award.

G is for free tickets other than MP. For example, if UA has an incentive for travel agents who book a certain volume, those tickets are booked in G. M, H, Q, V, and W are typically all discount economy, non-refundable but at different fare levels with different advance purchase requirements. Usually W is the lowest fare with longest advance purchase restrictions, V next, then Q etc. Not all fare codes will be available in all markets. And fare codes even within a given market will change from time to time, especially if there is a sale.

Within a given code - e.g., Q - there may be more than 1 fare basis (the letters after the Q). For example, 1 Q fare basis may be valid Tues, Wed, Sat while other Q fares are valid other days of the week.

I had a Q fare for YVR-SIN past summer. It did not allow me to be waitlisted.

When I pushed through the request on a CRS, it came out as HL but a few minutes later, it changed to UC (unable for waitlisting).

O is first class reward, I is business class reward.

S is used for some deeply discounted international fares; I've only seen it used for "companion fares" domestically.

Senior coupons book in T.

Baze, I am looking at a set of tickets for next autumn from the US to UK on UA "B" fare tickets. They state on the ticket: non refundable - change fee may apply"

Now, they certainly were upgradeable for 10k miles each way, but they do not appear to be refundable.
