Seating 4 vs 2, 3

I am sure most of you dont have to deal with this issue but I thought I will ask anyway. So I flew UA for first time yesterday since end of 2006 when I was 1P, and got seating 4 for my 2nd last row on a 757 and also seating 4 for my 2nd row in EMB-120. I thought if you are all the way in the back, shouldnt you get seating 2 or 3 vs 4?

How does the system determine who gets 2 or 3 or 4?

Window, Middle and Aisle.

Presumably you were on the aisle for both flights so you got seating 4.

Note that if traveling with companions you can board with the lowest seating group between you, e.g., mom and dad with a kid sitting window, middle, aisle, could board with the window ticket holder's 2 group.

So if I'm *G, my travel companions can board with me before boarding 1?
I didn't knew that.

Generally, you wouldn't have problem bringing your travel companions to board with you.
Unless you are planning to bring a dozen of your friend along. ;)

If they're on the same PNR I believe they are entitled to board with you (i.e., nobody's doing you a favor allowing it). If, on the other hand, you try to board a whole rugby team in group 1 because you have status, well that's another story...

Actually, they need not be on the same PNR, just be sitting with you. If you and a friend are on different PNRs but both sitting together, you can board with the lowest seating area. If you're sitting in different rows, then you can use your respective seating area.
