Pleasant surprise at TPE airport
I was traveling TPE-NRT-SEA-SFO and got some pleasant surprises at TPE airport.
When I tried to check-in online around 1am, I was only offered upgrade from TPE-NRT for $169. Upon arrival at the airport, I was told NRT-SEA is also available for ~$610. And check-in agent offered to throw in free upgrade from TPE-NRT if NRT-SEA segment is purchased.
This was definitely a good move for TPE. After TPE-SFO is removed, TPE-NRT always becomes an extra segment and cash upgrade would have been >$800 for TPE-NRT-SFO instead of $700 direct. With this offer, upgrade becomes even cheaper, ~$630 for NRT-SFO. I hope this is an ongoing offer, not a one-time offer.
Another surprise is that even though TPE-SFO is canceled, UA continues working with CI on the lounge access. The check-in agent asked me which lounge I would like to access (SQ/CI) and issue the lounge invitation accordingly. If you like CI lounge better, make sure to ask the check-in agent
