Split PNR?
I have two XC awards booked for next month on the same PNR. On the return we are both in Y; waitlisted for C. Flight is currently showing XC1. Should I split the PNR or wait for another XC slot to come available? Can somebody jump ahead of me and book the XC1 outright? (FYI, I'm 1K). Do both seats need to be open for us to clear when its an XC situation? (e.g.; how similar does XC and NC behavior mirror each other?).
I'm guessing splitting is probably a no-brainer, but I was hoping to keep Mrs. DHG on the same PNR for baggage reasons, etc.

First, I would call and make sure that the XC you're seeing isn't just a .bomb glitch. If it's real, I'd split. Try to give the XC seat to Mrs. DHG, so you can stay on the priority list, etc.

You probably find your answers in
Upgrade questions - two people on one pnr
Upgrade SYD-SFO/LAX: One PNR or Two?
Upgrade clearance policy for 2 travellers
potential downsides are discussed in
Upgrading kerfuffle -- how could I have avoided this?
Large number of hits if one searches "split PNR"
Note- realize the above are upgrades situations and OP is looking for awards tickets, but believe there are many parallels and there is some discussion of awards in the threads
Questions: waitlisted for F award NRT-BKK-NRT; when to buy standard award is a bit closer
