UA Connection gone for the PC

UA Connection on the PC is no longer available for download (or on disk). I bought a new computer, and went to the UA web site to re-download the software. It was not listed. I wrote to UA (e-mail) and received the following response:

******************************************
Thank you for taking the time to contact us. Distribution of the
United Connection disk-based software has been discontinued and the
download capability from the web site has been removed as of February
8, 1999. We encourage our online customers to use the Internet product
(United Connection on the Web) to book their travel.

While we will continue to support the disk product due to its many
loyal users, we are not adding any new features to the software.

United Connection on the Web offers functionality comparable to the
software product. Due to the growing population of Internet users, new
features are being added to the web product in response to requests
from our customers. We are introducing the ability to redeem Mileage
Plus(r) award travel at United Connection on the Web and we will also
improve Mileage Plus account summary access by providing real-time
information. The potential for earning bonus miles is double on the
web - for each United flight purchased on the web and completed, earn
500 miles per segment/maximum 1,000 round trip at www.ual.com.

Your understanding is appreciated and we hope that you will give the
web version a try.
Regards,
Rosa

The web version seat map does not work for Internet Explorer users, so I am out of luck. If you plan to get a new pc, or just re-install Windows, be aware that you will lose UA Connection forever.

rxziebel:

on your old computer, do you still have the downloaded setup file (ucweb30.exe)? it's about 8MB, and can be transferred to your new computer via laplink, or a comparable program.

I have a CD version of UC2.0. E-mail me if you wish and I will mail it to you!

I've got the 3.0 download file. I'll see if I can find a (public) place to put it over the weekend.

Anybody ever get this to work from behind a firewall?

Save it to a disk for future installs. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks for the help. The download site worked fine, and I have UC back again. You all are great!

I too wrote UA about this and got back the same form letter. They claim that the web site does as much as the software version - well, I don't think that it even comes close.

The thick, downloadable software version is much, much faster. It has a "Super Shopper" feature to search a span of multiple days, and it's hotel checker, price, and availability feature is unsurpassed by any other engine out there. It is a real shame that they are removing this.

The web site feature list doesn't even come close. I can see why they did this - they only have to support one and it is easier for novices.

I wonder if we can start some sort of grass movement to tell them how much better it is and to continue to support it.

Another feature that the web version does not have: Senior discounts. When I tried the web for comparison I noticed that thge price quotaed was 10% higher. I called the helpline and they told me I could not get the discount on the web version.

Thanks for the link Axey, After leaving my job (and my laptop) I now miss the PC version for its outstanding hotel and quick seat map capabilities.
