Lets hope passengers don`t say BOB too loudly or else!!!!;)
Old news.....but anyways.... http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/...298614078.html |
IMHO during this "test market" exiting IAD for the BOB they will make the fares slightly cheaper and the only determining marker will be the load (how full the flights are out of IAD compared to other hubs or compared to the last six months or so exiting IAD) I also wonder how much this will affect the other overseas hubs with both Y and C class awards in particular.

Perhaps the business class changes aren't as bad as you think - seems like there are some fresh food items on offer for free to domestic business class passengers.
Here's the official press release: Press Release Source: United Airlines United Tests Food Choices in Business and Economy Thursday August 21, 6:20 pm ET CHICAGO, Aug. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- United is launching a trial during the fourth quarter of food options for both business and economy class. As part of the trial, on domestic flights with three cabins of service, United will be offering United Business customers complimentary fresh sandwiches, salads, snack boxes or snacks, depending on the length of flight. The products will be the same as the Buy on Board sandwiches and salads offered in United Economy. Business-class customers will continue to enjoy complimentary beverages, including wine and cocktails. "Our industry is changing and we need to tailor products and services to what customers value and provide them with more choice," said Graham Atkinson, executive vice president and chief customer officer. "We are listening to our customers as we test new options in both the business and economy cabins." For trans-Atlantic flights originating out of and returning to the company's Washington Dulles hub, United will on a trial basis be offering economy customers fresh Buy on Board options, including sandwiches, salads and snack boxes. There are no changes under way for international business or first-class customers, or for United's transcontinental p.s. flights. At the end of the year, United will evaluate the results of the trial and determine next steps. http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/080821/aqth538.html?.v=13 |
I with UA now on the catering decision for 3-class-J and 2-class-F for non long-haul flights. The end game is to have one catering for the whole plane. Improve the quality of the catering, charge economy passengers for it and give it free to those in the higher cabin. It just makes good sense, especially if the catering quality is improved.
The warm lasagna or other hot dishes in domestic premium cabins are so poor that I don't know who would not prefer a high-quality cold sandwich with a couple specialty sides. |

1K/Million Miler and I am now totally convinced Glenn Tilton and crew want to crash land the airline. We are supposed to be diverted by the nifty new commercials and the 3 aircraft that have the flatbed seats. I would love to meet the management goon that believes a "customer feedback group" that buys into degrading an already weak product in a killer market as the way to go. They will go alright.
Maybe Tilton & Co., supremely frustrated at their inability to merge, are now so determined to combine with someone, anyone, that they are trying to drive the value of the airline down so low by first pi**ing off crew (mission accomplished), then the pax (in process) to the point that an asset sale is the only way to go. Buyer selects the choice assets they want (routes, planes, MP+, etc., whatever) and then cherrypicks the employees they might want. Presto, bingo, effective merger done, UA entity as we know it goes away, Tilton & Co. ride off into the sunset. |
At the end of the year, United will evaluate the results of the trial and determine next steps.
Sounds like a threat to me... |

Why not do the same thing domestic - most likely on CO. Enjoy the lost revenue and thank you for encouraging me to sample the competition. Good luck with your strategy. FTers the way to make sure this ISN'T instituted is to "vote with your feet". If you actually FLY UA you will be telling Tilton & Co that you endorse this plan. I have my flights booked that will make me 1k. For any other flight I am on another airline. To do otherwise would be ridiculous and encourage management to continue with their folly. Also - if I am running any competing airline I am NOT going to do anything like this in Q4. I am going to watch UA flounder, take their PAX and see what call they make in Q1. This is stupid stupid stupid if people respond reasonably. Unfortunately they don't always which is why lawyers, advertisers and PR executives get paid. |

Based on what I am seeing regarding the reduction in "loser" routes, and what I have never understood is the mgt team that sat around and said we can oversell X number of flights at a loss (and SOLDOUT flights) and this is good business. I know I am stating the obvious but UAL's goal is survival, not marketing to a small group w/o any differentiation other than poor service. Is it possible that Tilton is eliminating routes and planes and services in order to reduce competition and finally be acceptable to CO as their low cost domestic carrier? The mgt team cashes out in the CO takeover and customers, employees and vendors all lose as they ride off in the sunset with their riches. |
Thank you UA
Personally I'd like to thank UA for their perfect timing of this announcement. I was in the middle of making two 'airline loyalty' decisions (see below) neither of which was easy when this news broke.
1) With my move to LA and with AA/BA supplying all the routes I'm likely to fly (UA fly all but 1) should I change over from *A to OW bearing in mind I'm nearly 1P with UA? 2) I'll need to do a couple of MRs to get 1P...is it worth it? Well...no need to dither and procrastinate any more...the choice is obvious. I have just liquidated all my miles in UA in one go (actually bought friends their TATL flights) and that will be me done with them. What a pathetic shambles! :td::td::td: |
