Baggage and security in LAX for QF connection?

Sorry if this has already been answered, but I've searched for related posts and couldn't find anything that answered my questions.

I'm flying YEG->DEN->LAX on UA then connecting LAX->BNE on QF and have read that QF has a shuttle between terminal 4 and TBIT. Is it possible to collect my checked bags, walk from terminal ?6-8? to terminal 4 and catch the shuttle without passing through security etc?

Does UA have an interline agreement with QF for baggage? Is it possible to check them all the way through from YEG?

I haven't connected at LAX before (normally fly UA to/from SFO) and want to be prepared in case of a delay arriving into LAX.

Nope, you'll have to leave security area of Terminal 6/7/8 (depending on which you arrive at) and then go to Terminal 4 to check bags & clear security again to get to departure gate for QF. You can walk from the UA terminal to Terminal 4 which can be faster than waiting for the shuttle and gets you a little exercise between flights but some people complain about the car exhaust in the air.

Sorry, no experience with interlining to QF so I'll leave this for others.

How long is your connection time? If over 1.5-2 hours you'll be fine but less than that can be a problem if (1) no interlining and/or (2) heavy departure time for int'l flights from Terminal 4 in which case security can get backed up.

Happy travels!

A little more digging in the QF forum turned this up:

You can certainly do it with United. I flew Baltimore - Brisbane without seeing my bags at LAX.

I actually have 3+ hours, but you never know when your flight will be canceled or you'll be on the tarmac for a few hours. And LAX has a bad reputation of being a nasty place for connections.

Excellent news about the interlining of baggage! Not sure if that means you get both sets of BPs but even if you don't all you need to do is walk over to Terminal 4, possibly get BP, and pass through security to QF gate -- definitely doable in the 3 hours you have and even as little in 1.5 hours if pressed.

You can stay airside if you really want to.

Go to T6. From there you can catch the airside shuttle bus to T4 if you have an AA boarding pass or an itinerary that indicates an AA flight out of T4. (they're easy to make).

In the evening, AA operates an airside shuttle bus to TBIT from T4. It is supposed to be for passengers arriving on AA, but they're probably only interested in your QF boarding pass.

No one should ever have to clear "security" more than once per trip.
