UA 900 SFO-FRA, Dec 26 op-up frienzy

Just got off the flight UA900, SFO-FRA departed Dec 26th at 14:10 SF local.

WAY oversold in the back, so the op-ups were flowing.

Anyone else get to partake in the op-up fiesta that ensued?

There certainly didn't seem to be the usual protocol for Status / fare paid ordering for the ups (but I could be very wrong on this point).

We were lucky and got first from our paid biz tickets. Nice way to start vacation.

Nice one! That's a nice long flight to enjoy the upgrade on too. Can't ask for much more.

Last year was sort of an op-up paradise for me. My average was 50% op-up
of the flights on UA and *A as a 1P (status match)
Most of these were international flights.. on or around holiday weekends...

This year, as a 1K.. I rarely saw any op-ups. I did manage to score
a few using my SWUs and domestic segments using
CR1s... but not many op-ups.

Glad to know that you got an op-up ^

Wish I had been on that flight. I haven't had an international op-up in a while. I'm hoping it's about time, but then again, I do usually pre upgrade.

Are you saying that you were op-upped on more than half of your flights??

Can you walk on water, too?

I have a feeling some are thinking OP-UP is the same as upgrading with supporting instrument; similar to non-stop vs. direct flight.

Out of curiosity, what makes you say they didn't go by status/fare paid? Congrats on the op-up though, that's a long flight!

What a nice Christmas gift .

I hope I'll get one of those soon, it's nice to not have to pay or use an instrument for and upgrade.

In over 2 years of flying with UA and over 300,000 BIS miles, I have only been op-up'd once! ... and that was DFW-DEN on a 737.. go figure.

(I dont fly International...)

Correct! Since I became 1P with a status match.. I had absolutely no
miles or certificates to upgrade. I got an op-up on my very first
UA flight from JFK-SFO.. go figure. I'm thinking it had to do
with Holiday travel... over sold flights and few elites.

This year has not been that great! but I have enough instruments to
upgrade if I prefer.

I can't walk on water.. but I do very well with a kayak

Also 1 OP-UP in my UA life, and had flown less than 120k BIS at the time. Mine was as a 1P on NGO-SFO.

Was flying from the US to Europe with a friend two weeks back. He was doing LAS-SFO-FRA and was offered to buy up to C for $599 on SFO-FRA (which he did), I was going on LAS-ORD-LHR and was offered to buy op to C on ORD-LHR for $899 (which I didn't take). Bit unfair that the buy-up on the longer flight was $300 cheaper than on the short flight.

Also when I was on the ORD-LHR flight there were two guys who clearly got an operational upgrade (broad smiles, hushed voices saying "yes, thats really our seats", "better be quiet about it in case someone notices"). I enjoyed the show from behind the curtain - before feeling sorry for myself... :-)

So I'm not sure I always understand the reason behind upgrades. I guess sometimes it is just luck...

Was on UA 927 FRA-SFO 10 days before X-mas. Also oversold in the back. 3 op-ups happened on board by GA: 1 Premex travelling with a Premier and a child.

My parents just got a nice one yesterday SFO-JFK (I can't recall which flight but it leaves around 11:40) they were already upgraded to C by me but apparently one of their seats was stuck in recline. The GA knew about it ahead of time and asked them to wait as it was being fixed. They were still waiting after all had boarded (and they should have been very nervous at the prospect of being downgraded at this point) finally the GA just said this is ridiculous and asked someone to reseat (I believe within F class) and got them 2 F seats together- so it was an op-up AND the elusive double upgrade--all at 3P status level.^

I was on SFO-NRT also yesterday and overheard a couple talking about being op upped to C class- so there are a lot floating around right now it seems....
