Why would a 747 be doing in Denver in the first place anyway?
Nothing It'l goes out of there ... and not with a 747?

I believe the plane that becomes UA 940 arrives from DEN at ORD... perhaps as UA 908?

The past 3 times I've been there i've seen them operating the ORD-DEN flights to clear the backlogs. Also maybe something to do with the 2 777's sitting broken in LHR?

Should be more of it!
I remember last year checking into SYD-SFO-IAD and agent asking what seats we wanted on the 747 to IAD.
I cockily told her the 747 did not service IAD, but it was a 777, and we already had row 8.
She smiled and handed over boarding passes for exit rows 15A/B that we had on the SYD flights, also for SFO-IAD ... they'd subbed the 747 and no-one else had woken up to ask for row 15 yet.
What a use of a single SWU that was.

blah, that's a hellishly short red-eye already. The 747 is the fastest plane in UA's fleet and would just make it even shorter.
I've stepped out of the terminal before 5am more than a few times after that flight. ugh. I used to wonder if the pilots would take bribes to back off the gas a little bit or do some big loops on the way.

I've seen a 747 sitting at DEN recently, presumably remaining overnight as it was pretty late and there was no departure information at the gate - once on a Thursday night and again last Friday. Thought that was pretty strange as we don't get 747s too often at DEN.

Pre 9/11, there was quite a bit of 747 routes in/out of DEN.
