shortest UAL flight with largest plane?

the IAD-DEN 777 thread made me wonder what is the shortest UA route with the largest plane is?

sftrvlr Nov 28, 2006 8:28 pm

ORD -> DTW in a DC-10

sftrvlr Nov 28, 2006 8:38 pm

Mel-syd

If we're talking about the shortest flight on the largest airplane in the fleet, I think that would be between MEL and SYD on a B744 at 429 miles.

A current flight is MEL SYD on a 744

Unimatrix One Nov 28, 2006 8:46 pm

UA used to fly DEN-COS with a DC-10.

Also, I'm not sure what the shortest 757 route currently is, but UA used to fly a 757 SFO-MRY.

I've been on ORD-IAD on some pretty big equipment; not a phenominally short flight, but short in the scheme of things.

that is not far for a 744. JAL uses 747s LAS-LAX

There are some very short routes that are flown by relatively large aircraft:

HKG-CAN (84 miles) on B757s and A320s (China Southern)
BEY-DAM (66 miles) on A320s (Syrian Arab Airlines)
BAH-DMM (54 miles) on A320s (Gulfair)
DAR-ZNZ (46 miles) on B737s (Air Tanzania)

And what I believe is the shortest air route in the world with jet service:
BZV-FIH (17 miles) on B727s (Hewa Bora Airlines)

PIA used to fly DXB-AUH(-KHI) on a 747-200.

makes sense that many of the shortest routes are over water, where the alternatives to flying are slim and/or none.

wonder what the shortest routes are when driving is an option...

and i thought UA 748 SFO/RNO on an A320 over 192 miles was overkill...

Really? I thought MRY's runways weren't accepetable for large jets. I've flown out of there many times, to LAX and SFO, and each time it was on a turboprop.
