Thermal paper is where it's all going, and I hope it happens quickly. Far too much paper is wasted by people continually reprinting BPs - having thermal paper will reduce that desire.

I like the UA ticket chomper.. makes me feel like I'm boarding a slightly more comfy, long distance subway.
I'm one for whom the thermal paper doesn't work... as it doesn't cost AA/UA less to use thermal paper, but rather more because after getting the thermal paper, I end up getting card stock BPs anyway.
And then for good measure, I go into the club to reprint the BP from the printer, [remark deleted by moderator per TOS].

Most machines dont have ticket jackets and thermal paper is inconvenient and curl up in your pocket or briefcase. The PIT ticket counter is using these but if you check in outside you get the card stock. United had something unique with the Gold and Blue boarding cards. I guess another service enhancement.

Nothing new here. These are slowly migrating through the system. I've gotten them at Premier checkin at BOS and at C11 in ORD.
I had a new experience this morning though. I had a cardstock gold BP from the chicken, and the GA scanned the barcode on it even though the ticket chomper was available.

The migration at IAD is taking place at a rapid pace. All the self-check-in kiosks for those without baggage and all kiosks within terminals A/C/D are now thin thermal paper.
The machines in front of the main terminal check-in counter still use the thicker card stock but that should change shortly as well.

I sure hate the thermal BP's... happy that Teddy here in TPA still has real BP's, surprisingly!^

This is the only reason I love the thermal BPs. I jam them in my pocket all wadded up, and not having to worry about a cardstock BP falling out of my pocket is nice when running between flights. I crush my OLCI BPs in exactly the same manner, and all works out great!

and remember... always make a copy of the thremal BP at your earliest convenience as they will fade quickly when exposed to light. You'll want to make sure that you have a "good" copy to send in if your miles don't post.
I recall working in a mortgage company years ago with the old thermal faxes. We learned the hard way about the fading, and quickly resolved the issue by placing photocopies in the files attached to the thermal faxes.

Ditto for company reimbursements if you need to submit BPs to get reimbursed for plane tickets (a common controls policy, since otherwise someone could buy tickets and return them and get reimbursement). Of course, the majority of restaurant charge card receipts are thermal too now. Some of them get faded before I get around to submitting them ...

Problem with thermal is it fades rather quickly. So if you wait until the end of the year to reconcile all your flights/BPs and find that something 11 months earlier didn't get credited, you'll likely have an illegible BP to submit to customer service.

Just noticed these as well in BOS this morning. This sucks... I like keeping my boarding cards for memory sake... and it's going to be harder to stack these new wobbly paper boarding pass...

I've rec'd the thermal BPs at 5 or 6 diff airports this year.
Maybe soon, there will be a staff member indicating that this paper is being used as part of United's hightened security policies or even FAA regulations!?!

I got a thermal from Mr. Chicken at IAD recently. The "print" job was so bad it was barely readable. Was the thermal printer low on heat?

Last I looked this thread was about thermal paper boarding passes. If you care to talk about other issues unrelated to United and Mileage Plus, there is a forum called Omni.

In addition, laser printer paper and PDFs from OLCI do not suffer this problem.
