Once upon a time was about a year ago, and no, the crew didn't do it themselves. Since the computations were never done "planesidie" by the crew, but had to be relayed via radio to the load planner, this is one of the areas were centralizing it loses very little in performance and generates much savings in terms of efficieny. It also most likely improves performance as the volumes done by the central people should increase their specialization and skill.

You gotta break a few eggs to make an egg salid sandwich (how do you spell omlette?)

Earlier this year one of my GRU-IAD flights had W&B issues. The flight was already delayed due to a mechanical. Then just as we were taxiing down the runway, the pilot pulls over and announces that there are W&B issues. So, another delay.

Then we find out that IAD customs/immigration only keeps a very small staff after all the early morning int'l flights have arrived. And as we were very late, we had about 2 customs staff to process an overstuffed 767. There were a lot of unhappy people and many missed connections.
