Changing dates on award tickets
I have heard conflicting information about changing an award ticket. Would I be able to book an award return ticket from sdf-bkk, then fly the sdf-bkk leg, and then make change to the return (bkk-sdf) dates?
Are there different rules for this depending on whether the award is solely on UA or operated by a partner airline? Thanks :-: |
Yes, there are different rules.
On *A awards, once you fly the first segment, no changes whatsoever are allowes. On all-UA awards, you can change pretty a lot even after travel has commenced: dates, routings, even origin and destination (not regions, though)... |
Thanks. That is great news. How much does it cost to make changes? (for a premier member or a non-elite)
Would a UA award allow me to fly from sdf-bkk and then bkk - carribean for 60k miles? Thanks again :-: |

No, once travel has commenced on a United award you can't change it to add partners (and if you add partners before the travel commences then you can't change it afterwards).
Before travel commences you can cancel the award and redeposit the miles for a $100 fee. You get the taxes back. You can also "suspend" the award so that if at any time in the future (withing 330 days of original ticketing) you need an award with the same routing you can just change the dates for free instead of having to issue a new one. Keep in mind that the whole routing has to stay the same - including all connections. Otherwise you'll be hit with a $100 change fee. You can definitely do US-Asia-Caribbean for 60K miles. |
What about standby on an NH award all on United
I flew all UA metal CLT-ORD-SFO-HKG-ORD-CLT last week using NH award, and tried to catch an earlier flight HKG-ORD, but was repeatedly told that since there was no XY availablity on the earlier flight that I could not go standby. So spent 5 hours in the HKG airport.
However, upon arriving ORD, we asked and were put on standby and cleared for an earlier flight ORD-CLT. Were originally scheduled for the first flight the next day, but they had no problem putting us on the last flight of the day. So do the rules vary intl. vs. domestic? Thanks. |
