purchasing e-upgrade blocks

Is anyone else having problems purchasing the blocks of e-upgrades at the UA website? I have a trip in a couple weeks and am too low in 500 milers to upgrade myself and my son. But the site seems to be redirecting me to call customer service.

I have found this feature of the UA website very inconsistent, some times I can purchase the blocks of 4 for $200 and other times I cant. One time I made the mistake of actually calling customer service and they wanted to charge me $325 for the block of 4.

qasr Jun 3, 2006 4:22 pm

$200 for 4 is the Elite price, for Premiers & above. $325 for 4 is the non-elite, general member price.

If you're having problems with the website, you can buy them at check in/gate as well.

albatross Jun 3, 2006 4:31 pm

You can upgrade yourself even if you have none, specifying e-500s, and if the upgrades clear, you can by them at check-in.

No surprise that united.com is not able to take your money, but very sad for UAUA's prospects...

HeadInTheClouds Jun 3, 2006 4:34 pm

I was trying to do this about six weeks ago. I tried every day for probably two weeks, and it never would go through. I finally decided to not upgrade the flight in question. Yeah, I could have called. I just didn't feel like it.

This website function is obviously broken, and has been so for a while apparently. Sad.

albatross Jun 3, 2006 4:50 pm

I agree 100% that it is sad that they won't take your money. Or mine, as I have noticed before. Or others, who have used united.com and can't find united metal flights. So crazy to run a business like this, and have a website in 2006 that won't take money from people...............

Sorry for the rant....

However, if you want to upgrade, just upgrade as if you have the e-500s. Then, when it clears, at check-in you can buy the certificates for the same price.

I know. That's what makes it even worse. I knew that, yet I just didn't feel like dealing with that at check-in or talking to people on the phone. So $200 of mine didn't go to United. One can only wonder how much money they are leaving on the table. Even if no customer reports this to them (not that it would do any good), doesn't SOMEONE there notice that the revenue in this particular category went to zero all of a sudden and maybe contemplate that something might be wrong?? Again, the only word for it is "sad".

I am curious, were you able to purchase 500-mile upgrades online at any point within the last six weeks? I literally tried every day for at least two weeks. Sometimes multiple times in a day and on different computers actually on a RTW trip so in many different countries no less! It wouldn't go through no matter the day, hour, location, computer, planet, universe, dimension or otherwise...

Can you clarify how this works? I'm going to try to upgrade IAD-SFO in a few weeks, but I only have 4 certs for this 2500 mile flight. Being a lowly 2P, my chances of clearing are low, and I don't want to pay $200 if I'm not going to be upgraded. This is only one segment within BDL-SFO. I don't care about upgrading the BDL-IAD leg.

1) How do I request the upgrade? Do I call in or can I do it online?

2) Assuming the upgrade clears, at what point to I have to purchase the 500 milers? During checkin at BDL? Can OLCI handle upgrading only 1 segment?

3) Do I have to purchase a pack of 4 even though I only need 1?

jfdnyc1981 Jun 4, 2006 2:43 pm

I purchased e-upgrades online last tuesday and did not have a problem nor have I ever had a problem; but I am not surprised with united.bomb, it is so inconsistent

1) Yes. The easiest way it to say it's paper 500s.
2) At checkin. OLCI should be able to handle this - you will get a DM card and have to check in in person anyway.
3) Yes.

Sunnyhere Jun 4, 2006 3:14 pm

Thank you, everyone, for making me feel like all those 500 milers sitting in my account, are actually worth something. Unfortunately, the reality is living in the all-TED city of Las Vegas makes them not-so-valuable, and the same goes for the CR-1's.

I was able to purchase 500-mile upgrades in early May and then again today. I am the person who posted the original posting, so I feel your pain of trying many, many times.

Why did it work today? Who knows. Good Karma. The sun is shining in PDX???

However, if your upgrade clears at the gate (which would be the most likely scenario for a 2P, IME), you'll be out of luck. Generally, they won't allow you to purchase 500's at that point so you'd either have to pucharse the 4 additional 500's ahead of time or pass on the upgrade.

You could try to purchase them by phone as soon as your name is called at the gate, but a) I don't know whether you'd have enough time as they are usually trying to finish the boarding process by the time they clear upgrades for 2P's (again, IME); and b) I don't know how quickly the 500's would appear in your account.

One other thing -- if your upgrade clears at any point and you decline it, you'll almost certainly lose your seat assignments in Y and you may be stuck in E-. No harm in waitlisting until checkin, but if it doesn't clear by then, you may want to decide to cancel it rather than risk your E+ seat.

Why wouldn't they allow me to purchase the 500's at the gate? Has anyone had luck doing so?

Also, wouldn't I have my boarding pass for IAD-SFO when I check in at BDL? If the upgrade doesn't clear, I would still have it. If it does clear, and they don't let me puchase the additional 500s, I would still have it. Does this make sense?

Personally, I've never tried to purchase 500's at the gate, but FT conventional wisdom has it that the GA's don't have the time (or aren't willing to spend it) to process payments for 500's at the gate. Every account I've read has indicated that the GA's basically say you have to have the certs already in your account or you can't get the upgrade. Some FT'ers have suggested that you can purchase them by phone before claiming your upgraded seat, but I don't know what the success rate is with that approach.

As for the boarding pass question, if your IAD-SFO upgrade has cleared by the time you check in at BDL, it's a no brainer: you purchase the 500's at that time and get your BP for your upgraded seat. However, if your IAD-SFO upgrade hasn't cleared by that time, you'll get the BP for your regular E+ seat, along with a Departure Management (DM) card for the waitlisted upgrade.

The problem is that IME, if they upgrade you, they give away your seat to someone else before you confirm & provide the 500's for your upgraded seat. That means that if you decline the upgrade, they've already put someone else in your seat and the fact that you hold a (now obsolete) BP for that seat won't matter. They'll still put you in whatever seat is available and give you a new BP.

As a side note, it works this way for OpUp's, too. Several times, I've been on a different PNR from Mrs. hockeyguy and they've OpUp'd me without her. By the time I've declined my single upgraded seat, they've already put someone else in my original seat next to my wife which has made it very complicated to get us reseated together again, parciularly if we want to keep the good seats we originally selected and not get sent back to E-. As a result, we always try to travel on the same PNR now.

I too have had trouble buying e ugrades over the past
six weeks. I applied for paper cert upgrade's on line. Of the Six segments attempted, all cleared at the gate, but have been charged for only two segemnts flown. I alway's explained to the GA about the united .bomb
experience, several smiled in apperant agreement. I tried to pay with
credit card but MP visa has only been charged 200.00 for one pachage.
I may have just had a lucky streak, but maybe the take home message
is to always hit paper cert's on the website, get to the gate early and try to buy cert's there. Some of these may have been discretionary up ups by the GA BUT I am only a lowly 2p heading toward 1p.

cstead Jun 7, 2006 3:28 am

I just did OLCI for tomorrow night's LIH-LAX redeye. I wanted to buy certs after my upgrade cleared, but couldn't. I declined the upgrade and luckily E+ is wide open. I sure hope LIH1K or some other high roller walks up and pays a good fare for what could have been my seat.

OLCI offered me a buy-up for $400...

Why couldn't you buy the certs? From your post, it sounds like your upgrade cleared somewhat in advance. Did you have the same trouble trying to purcahsed them on-line as others have reported?

Purchased E-Upgrades Expired

I am hoping someone can help me with this. I normally fly US, but sometimes fly UA as *Gold. When I purchased my last block of upgrades, I asked what happens if the upgrades expire - as I did not expect to be flying UA very much going forward. The agent told me that PURCHASED upgrades will be reissued with a new expiration date???? I called the service center and was told that they would be converted to miles automatically (which they were not). Has anyone else been told this when purchasing e-upgrades?

I typically purchase a few sets of 500s each year. I've never heard of this claim before. The story is that 500s expire after 1 year in your account and they become regular miles. Never heard anything about reissuing or seen anything in writing.

I belive if you are a US Airways elite and you purchase upgrades on United, the ones you do not use are not put back in a bank or anything.. you immediately loose them.

Grrr.....I have two kits. I never would have bought them under these circumstances. I remember saying to the agent, "but they expire." She said to just turn them in and they will be reissued! I have a United account as well, so I guess the worst case scenario is that I can get them deposited. They are paper upgrades, so I am sure that it will not happen automatically, as the United phone agent told me today.

If they're paper upgrade certificates you're holding in your hand right now, I wouldn't imagine you would have a problem at all trying to use them again. I assumed you meant you bought a kit of 4 e-upgrades... I didn't know getting them in paper was a possibility.

For anyone wanting to buy e-upgrades--just purchased some online and it took seconds! Now is the time! Good luck!

slightly OT

Slighty OT, but related.
I'm a 2p, my SO is a GM. If we book flights on the same PNR, I can just request the upgrade for both of us with e-500s online? What if we book seperately? Is there any way I can sponsor her?

Same PNR -- no problem. You can request upgrades for both of you at the same time, and if seats are available, you'll both clear based on your status. If it goes to airport control, you'll be at two different spots on the waitlist.

Different PNR's -- possible, but a bit tricky. Some reports have it that you're not allowed to use 500's for someone on a different PNR, but I'm pretty sure it's possible as long as you're on the same flight. You may have to sweet-talk the TA or GA a bit, though.

My advice: for many reasons, it's much easier if you're on the same PNR. Try to keep it that way if you can, but if you can't, it's worth a call to see if they'll let you "sponsor" the upgrade for your SO.
