It sounds like there have been some changes to the rules - we'll have to wait for some GA "inside" information!

Actually, the fare basis was M. If the upgrade had been offered in both directions, the total fare would have approximated a Z fare. But the Z fares offered at the time were non-refundable, $400 change fee, etc., so I got what I think is a pretty good alternative. Of course, if I have to change anything, all of the goodies will go away and I'll have to start over.

One rationale I can come up with for this upgrade offer is that maybe UA expects the GRU-IAD flight to be oversold in Y and rather than wait to offer UFG's at check-in or op-up a bunch of people, maybe they are trying to snag some revenue in advance. It will also be interesting to see if I get an C>F upgrade offer, which I occasionally get on Z fares.

I am looking at booking flights to europe just now
As I go through the purchase pages I always get offerred E+ upgrade options
Has anyone been offerred upgrade to biz during initial purchase or is that reserved for the gate on the day???

LHR-IAD

Y to C was GBP 449 when doing online check-in then dropped to GBP 409 at the airport. Staff appears to have a printed card that they reference when you ask about this.

I decided to use SWU.

I paid GBP 330 in 2007.

This was in mid-August.

Early September:

UA 900, SFO-FRA, Z-F, $712, offered at check-in. Nice flight, nice service, new configuration 747!

Mid-September:

UA907, MUC-ORD, Z-F, $647, asked for (and received) at check-in. Old configuration 767, F cabin only 50% full. But nice service, and was happy for it on the 10+ hour flight.

Same day, asked for UFC ORD-SFO. "sorry, there is a wait list for upgraders", so no UFC being offered (actually good to hear this). Was supposed to be the new config 767, but was swapped for old config. Third flight of the 27-hour day, and was tired of flying...

I tried to do this several years ago and was told no. I don't know if the policy has changed since then.

If you do a paid upgrade at the gate, will it count as a EQM bonus for flying C or F? OR is it treated as an "upgrade instrument" thus only crediting you with EQM/RDM based on original fare purchase?

I have a flight to PEK from SFO in October....I will probably ask if it is available, but whether there is an EQM bonus as if I had originally purchased C would be a factor for me....

Nope, no COS bonus. Treated like any upgraded flight.

There is a science to this ; ).

Paid gate (and easy/united.com) upgrades are offered only to those passengers who have purchased certain fare classes. Further, a specific dollar amount is assigned based on flight length (3000-4000, 4000-5000 miles, etc.) I don't work at the airport, but I have access to the profile, maybe one day I'll post the contents here. : )

Is today that day? I am not sure what the fare classes are exactly, but I know that on my S-Class fare last May, I was offered it both directions into/out of LHR.

The only rule I have ever seen enforced is no upgrades from NC-- and not all stations/CSR's seem to enforce it.

My understanding is that UFC's, when offered, are valid on most tickets that book into C/D/Z/Y/B/E/M/U/H/Q/V/W/S/T/XC/XY/NY. I don't know if they are good on K/L or opaque fares-- I believe they are not good on tickets with ID designators, and G fares.
