Help doing ORD-PVG/TPE split one-ways
 

So I may have to do a trip ORD - PVG relatively soon. The thing is that the weekend flights that I am considering are either all sold out in business or I would be waitlisted e.g. ORD - PVG direct or ORD - SFO - PVG. In addition, I am not getting D fares both ways and faced with paying close to $6000USD for discounted C.

Earlier this year going to NRT, I spent ~20000USD less by doing a routing through TPE and then using an ex-TPE one-way D fare. (about 14000USD)

I'd like to see if it is possible to do this again esp. since I would like to spend a 2 days or so in Taipei. So...

Is there a way to get one-way business class transpacific ORD - PVG and then one-way PVG - xxx - TPE for around 2000USD?

The one-way D fare on UA from ORD - PVG was around 3000USD so no savings there.
I prefer *A, but will fly other carriers.
I don't mind flying coach between PVG and TPE.

PVG <> TPE is always a headache. I have always had to resort to non-star-alliance airlines. Just this morning I booked SFO-TPE and PVG-SFO. Just for fun, I tried to find a Star-Alliance routing for getting to PVG from TPE. The website actually managed to bring up an itinerary on UAL (TPE-NGO) and ANA (NGO-PVG), but the system (and phone reservations) couldn't price it the way I needed it. Go figure.

I usually spend the $500 (I know, it should be cheaper) and fly DragonAir or one of the others via HKG. The W fare for the UA legs on my dates was $1300, so that's under your $2k limit...

I don't mind flying non-star alliance between TPE and PVG.

So if I can do it for 500USD one-way like KA between PVG - HKG - TPE. Thats fine.

That still leaves me about 15000USD to get one-way from ORD from some westcoast gateway to PVG....

you should be able to get C/J class TPE-TG-HKG and then HKG-KA-PVG for well under USD500... I did TPE-TG-HKG-CX-PEK for USD467 all-in earlier last year.

That way, it gets you *A mileage and the segment count on the TPE-HKG leg, although it's only 500+bonuses.

Have you checked out www.zuji.com for TPE-PVG or PVG-TPE?

One random look produces the following with fares less than $500:

Air Macau via Macau

CX/KA via HKG

EVA/KA via HKG

CI/MU via HKG

Yeah, the TPE - PVG portions don't look bad at all. But I gotta find a cheap one-way over the PVG ex-USA...

Any suggestions?
