Waitlist question

There was a thread earlier about what to do when you need to change your routing because you cleared a waitlist. It mentioned that if there was a time change in your original itinarary that you could have those miles redeposited to your account (don't want to pay becuase route is not identical as original). Question is...do I reticket with additional miles and then ask to have my miles redeposited. Is there a possibility of no availability of "additional" seats?

Uhh, I'm not quite sure I understand.

Are you saying that there was a schedule change and you want to change your routing on an award ticket? If so, calling UA should solve that problem. Having your preferred routing ready to give to the agent will help. Or you can get a full refund for free. Either cash or miles tickets are generally treated the same in this case.

Sorry, no I have a MP reward ticket. I waitlisted for another flight but it's a different routing. Original MCO-Den-HNL waitlist route MCO-LAX-HNL. So, if I clear that waitlist and decide to take that flight I pay $100 per ticket to redeposit my miles. There was an extensive thread which I can't find explaining how you could avoid this. If I remember right the major points were:
-If there is a time change on a MP ticket you can have your miles redeposited no fee.
-If you would like to avoid this penalty if you have to change your award ticket to a different routing and there is a time change you can have your miles redeposited and take the new route.

I think I am supposed tobook the new route and pay the miles...then have my other ticket cancelled and miles redeposited. I'm just wondering if there's a possiblity that there won't be seats on another segment of a 2 segment route.
Example MCO-Den-HNL changed from MCO-LAX-HNL

I guess the bottom line is if I need to change my award routing because I want to come home one day later is there a way to get around paying that $100 a ticket redeposit fee.
I hope this makes sense now. I'm new to all this thanks for your help.

I think I see what you are doing...

You can book your desired route, now that space has opened up, and then if/when there is a schedule change you can decline their alternate flights and ask for a full refund of the miles. Yep, you can do this. Just be aware, that if there is no schedule change you would have to pay the $100 to get your original miles back, but that is no worse than if you did it originally.

Of course, if the schedule change has already happened on your booked reservation, just call up and request to be rerouted on your desired route. If the first agent won't do it, hang up, try again, etc.

BTW, if you are a 1K/UGS then all award ticket fees are waived.

Thanks Qasr...I wish I were a 1K member. One more question I don't want to give up my original award until I know I've cleared the waitlist. Need to get home. If the waitlist opens... do I on paper just book another ticket and then hope there is a schedule change and cancel the orginal award or do I try to redeposit the miles and rebook the ticket all in the same call? I know what you mean about more helpful agents. Sorry for so many question. I'm learning.

If there has not been a schedule change on your original ticket, then the $100 change fee applies. If one occurs later, you can get a full refund for free.

If you don't have the second ticket yet, I can't see how you can be waitlisted. I guess that means the first ticket is waitlisted on your preferred route. This could be a problem. If the first ticket clears the new routing, you wouldn't be able to book another ticket since you already took the award seat.

AGGHH!!! I need someone's advice. My waitlist cleared and I can now travel home on a later time. My dilema is should I wait to see if I will have a time change on my original flight and have the miles redeposited for free or should I just go ahead and pay the $600 to change 6 tickets? Trying to figure out what my chances are for a flight MCO-Lax-Hnl having a flight time change.

Yes, I did but I didn't quite understand this part of your answer. Sorry for not knowing MP rules. Don't want to make a "mess" out of this MP ticket.
