UAL computers down?? Need help ASAP...

Hi all. My husband is stuck at PDX and United is telling him that all computers are down systemwide and "no planes are going anywhere." He can't get any more information out of them.

Does anyone have any other info? Can he get endorsed over to another airline? He needs to get back to LAX for a meeting. Thanks.

For once united.com is not the first to crash :D

flyinbob Jan 3, 2006 4:14 pm

United.com probably caused it! Nothing from here except u.com is giving the "reservation system unavailable" message.

CApreppie Jan 3, 2006 4:16 pm

United IT is absolute junk.

All reservations systems are timing out when trying to look up UA availability

I can tell you that as of 3:15pm PDT, according to the ATC screen I see UA flights are coming and going. Takeoffs happening throughout the system, though I understand lots of ground holds at ORD, SFO, BOS, and others due to wind and weather.

And it looks like the ORD-HKG flight didn't go until about 4:15 today. Is that flight EVER on time?

Not unless UA can print him a paper ticket or a UA agent can push the PNR electronically, neither of which are likely to happen while the system is down.

If it was me and the meeting was important and things didn't resolve within an hour or so, I'd rebook myself on another carrier and let the chips fall where they may on reimbursement (with UA or, more likely, my employer).

I got a phone call from my friend who is MSP. She worried that if she could catch the plane as the checkin line did not move at all. If no planes are going anywhere, that might be a good news to her as she will not miss her flight.

Flight Summary

System is not available. Please reenter your request.

Let me check what's up at IAD.

Let's not start rumours that no planes are going anywhere. I am watching UA planes come and go often here at the airport.

Certainly makes things more difficult with the rez system being down and having to do things manually.

Patience is key.

JBLUA320 Jan 3, 2006 4:31 pm

Yep, seems like only Apollo (res) are affected.

tommy.edison Jan 3, 2006 4:33 pm

apollo is down

I'm not trying to start any rumors. This is what he was told by the UA agents, who are not checking anyone in manually. Someone asked if they could check people in manually and that "no planes are going anywhere" response was what the agents are telling people. I'm posting here to find out if there's anything else that can be done (ie: checking in manually or through some other method).

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and help!

I noticed A UA flight to ORD (758) just departed PDX at about 3:20, so some flights are going somewhere. There seems to be a bit of a pause in flights out of SoCal and ORD, with no departures in the last half hour, but that could be weather and/or scheduling.
