Upgraded before ticket issue - will this cause a problem
I changed my outbound date and despite phoning twice a day for the past three days the new ticket has not been issued.
However, I went to united.com this morning and tried to upgrade it.....and...it worked! Looks like the old ticket number is still in the record (at least thats what the e-ticket receipt on united.com shows me). I'm now worried I'll be charged for a business ticket when they eventually get round to ticketing this. On the other hand I don't want to call for seat allocations in case the take away the confirmed upgrades. What to do? |

Very unlikely that you would be charged for a business class ticket just because you are booked into NC and not the class you intend to buy the ticket in. Maybe if you were booked into C,D or Z by accident, but not NC. |
Update
Well this could be interesting when I check in at SYD later today
I called and got upgrade seat allocations without asking any other questions. However, I've not received my updated e-ticket, and the original e-ticket is still there with the original ticket date and the incorrect expiry credit card date (which I guess they manually overroad initially). Looks like there was a ticket number in the reservation so united.com didn't have a problem offering the upgrades on-line. My CC has not been charged for the quoted fare difference either. So....either UA ticketing decided to let me get away without the increased fare ( ) or, this isn't ticketed yet. I guess I'll find out when I check in. |
Don't know if its too late and you're already en-route Wimpy, but I wish you luck.
IME I've had to be very careful about upgrading an itinerary before it’s ticketed. Not with regards to the fare charged, but to the fact that the system seems to choke completely when I try this. I get a call from my travel people stating that they can't ticket my reservation since its been changed from the original to an upgraded res. I usually get ticketed through my corporate agent so I don't know if your method would yield different results. I've got a reservation booked for 8 days from now and I'm forced to wait to put in for the upgrade because my agent is so slow to ticket - there's a holiday tomorrow in the US. It makes the upgrade roulette waiting game a lot more painful. |
Leave the office for the airport in about 20mins in case I need additional time to sort out a screw up. My seat reservations are still there, so whats the worst that can happen?
Ok...dont answer that. ;) |

too had a tix number that didn't change
Had a similar issue with a tix last December.
When I changed the date before depature, tix was never re-issued and tix number stayed in there. However in my case, the myitineraries oracle did reflect the changes. Upgrades went through without problem, never heard back from UA about the change. So I dare to assume that you will be just fine. |
Oh my... this is like a high end soap opera!!
I love the travel incurred time delays in these threads :-) Wimpy - please let us know what the final result was... (hope you got what you [we] wanted!)... M |
Everything worked out fine. They did charge the extra (at least it is reflected in the e-ticket receipt I asked for when I checked in. Was a bit of an anticlimax really :D

In my experience, if you buy the ticket from UA or United.com, then it's not problem. However, if you buy from a TA or other source, then your are specifically instructed NOT to get upgraded before the 016 is issued. YMMV, but it makes sense to me. |
Turns out that there is a downside in doing this. The ticket receipt has NC and NF as the fare class (rather than B), so this is the reason (I think) that the EQM/EQS bonus didn't post.
Sent a fax to MP with the info, so hopefully that will be fixed (otherwise I won't have enough SWUs to see me through the end of the year). |

Wimpy, i reg fly to USA from OZ on B class fare and u/g using miles. After many months SYD reservations and mileage plus finally admitted that anytime a fare is upgraded to NC/NF you lose the fare base, in this instence .. B class. Hence the computer which sweeps weekly, fails to pick up the bonus. A call to UA MP in SYD (after you insist on speaking to a supervisor or manager) should solve the problem. They will overwrite fare to B and within 7 days you should have EQM post. This is a problem that i think quite a few people will or have been dudded on. |
