Getting E+: Status vs EPA

Looking up LHR-ORD-CLT-HSV for later this winter as a possiblity to my travel plans and it occured to me that it might be cheaper just to buy EPA instead of paying for non-deeply discounted E-.

Here's what I've got so far:

Paying deeply discounted fares (Q + A) (Err, don't ask me how that A snuck in there; the outbound ORD-HSV is booked in A--whatever that's worth) I get USD1937.27.

Paying lowest refundable fares (M + B) I get: USD2566.14.

Difference between the two is 628.87. Even if I pay the higher price, I'd still have to fight for the E+ seat.

Or I can pay USD299 for the lowest tier EPA membership and ensure myself E+ seat on my entire journey.

Am I missing something here?

Edit: Found this gem on the EPA FAQ:

No.Unfortunately, we are unable to guarantee Economy Plus seating. All seating is subject to availability.

All this says to me, however, is that I pay an extra $300 instead of $628.87 and I get the same fighting chance as if I paid the $600? I'll be a Premier Exec at the time (what's that, 1P? 2P?) .. Am I reading this right?

How would you "have to flight" for the E+ seat on an M or B fare? Why would an EPA package offer you any more assurance of a seat in E+ than an M/B fare.

I'm with you on the economic issue...

1P

As a 1P you would be entitled to E+ without the EPA and without purchasing an M/B fare.

From United's page :

United Economy Plus
Reserved for elite members and customers with fares booked in Y, B or M class, United Economy Plus is an exclusive area of 6 to 11 rows in the United Economy section, offering up to five inches more legroom. Advance seating is available at the time of booking on a first-come, first-served basis. Economy PlusŪ is available on all United and Ted aircraft.

Anyone?

Right. If the goal is to secure E+ seating, I don't see the need for the OP to purchase EPA, or an M/B fare, to be able to sit in E+ (assuming E+ isn't already completely booked when the OP purchases the ticket), if the OP will be (or is already) a 1P.

As Ari and cawhite have noted, any level of elite status gets you E+ on any booking class.

The sentence you quote might be better understood as:

Reserved for elite members, and for customers with fares booked in Y, B or M class.
