UA Still Losing $1.5 Million Per Day

From today's WSJ:

UAL Corp. (UALAQ) posted a narrower April loss than it did a year earlier, despite $91 million worth of higher fuel expenses and a 4% lower capacity in the most recent April.

In a press release Thursday, the bankrupt holding company of United Airlines said its April net loss of $124 million included $28 million in reorganization expenses. April's operating loss was $47 million.

UAL's April mainline unit costs rose 7% on the 4% lower capacity.

Better 1.5 million then 4.5 million.

It still gives them time (and cash) to keep inching forward.

The April numbers are going to be slanted because they don't take into account the new contract(s) with machists and mechanics. Granted, only the mechanics have ratified the new deal, but the machinists seem likely to follow...

And according to this article, the amount of givebacks in the new contracts, plus the previously negotiated contracts with the pilots and FAs, plus savings from the PBGC takeover of the pensions, is approximately $700M US per year.

That would be over $1.9M per day in new labor/pension savings. That doesn't take into account fuel surcharges, which can (and probably will) be adjusted to account for higher fuel costs.

So will UA be making a profit of $400,000+ per day when the new contracts take effect? Let's hope so.

So if in April 05, UAL lost 124 million, minus the 28 million in reorganization expenses, (96 million loss in April 05), then what it the 47 million loss from? How do they account for the remaining 49 million in April 05 losses?

Thanks, Monks.

Usually those differences are attributed to other non-recurring charges or "one time events".

Interest expense accounts for most of the rest; operating losses (or income) don't include interest earned or paid.

Remember not too long ago

The Summer of 2000, The Pilots were hustling a absolutely ignorant management team, the customers were paying through the nose for poor service.

Well it's come full circle, the retired (and working) pilots are screwed, the stockholders hosed, Goodwin and Greenwald sitting preety, and the airline ends up really ****ty.

All of this and the loads are still full.

Love your sig. Reminds me of the Homer Simpson quote (he should have a whole section in Bartletts) "Beer, the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems"
