I've never been able to get the online function to work. I feel that a lot of the phone CSRs don't know how to do it correctly either. Two days ago I had a case where it took four phone calls to get it done! I had carefully rebuilt my exact itinerary on the website first to make absolutely sure.

I would second what has been said so far and recommend against the use of this feature.
If you need to change your itinerary in any way, just call an agent. Online refaring has caused me to loose upgrades (despite the confirmation screen still displaying NC class), might reshuffle your seat assignments, and worse than everything, seems really hard to track - in other words, when you call UAL, agents have a hard time figuring out how exactly the PNR was modified. |
Might I ask how you even DO this repricing? I can't find it on united's website anywhere.

> [Select PNR] > "Change itinerary" > "More options" (at the bottom right of the page) > "You can also check the price of the itinerary" (at the very bottom of the page) > [Wait... Wait... Wait...] Depending on your situation, you'll be proposed a refund (assuming your fare has dropped OR a lower fare is available), or you'll get the option to buy up. Pretty opaque. Works okay for non upgraded domestic itins, but really dont give it a try otherwise. |

A search with the phrase "refare" or "reprice" should turn up more information too. |
Thanks for the info. The website is dismally slow but works as advertised. Unfortunately, neither of my two flights actually dropped in price. :( Oh well. Thanks!

Does refaring only apply to the exact same itinerary, or could it possibly be used for a different connection point as well?

I bought a XMas SFO-SEA RT last month, via United.com. I applied a bunch of Type B vouchers plus some Entertainment Book coupons against the purchase.
I know that the fare has dropped today for my dates and routings, since United introduced the WELHOLN1 fare basis last night. When i try to reprice online, it says : "We are unable to process your request at this time. Please try again later, or contact your booking source to change your itinerary and exchange your tickets." What gives? (I've called United reservations four times and only reached India based CSRs who start off by repeating my itin etc.) |
Well, some good news about the repricing feature. About week ago, I bought transcon (OAK-IAD) tickets for travel over the winter holidays. With United's recent holiday sale, the fares have dropped from V and W fares (VA7UNNI and WA7UNI) to holiday V fares (VEKHOLN1 and VEPHOLN1).
Using the reprice feature, I was able to "save" $14.10 per ticket. Of course, it's in the form of vouchers (no credit card refund was available since the tickets are non-refundable) so their usefulness is rather limited... but hey, better than nothing. I think. :) I guess we'll see when I try to use them! :D Also, united.com has been blazing fast today... amazing. I think heck hath frozen over. |
I repriced a LAX-DEN ticket a couple of months ago with a $70 difference and I'm still waiting for a credit or voucher. I just emailed 1K voice yesterday and still waiing to hear back.

i'm gonna add this.....
i'm done w/on-line re-pricing and here's why. the fare is generally the same for those that reservations can see and.... when using the on-line re-price, i have never had a voucher show up and when calling, i was told that it get's queued in the system but it won't issue it until flght time (although the voucher issue date [the date you re-priced] and the voucher number are in the system) i have been successful in getting the refunds dept to re-issue the "missing" vouchers and they generally would show up w/in a week but i will now stick to calling reservations while holding a printout of the new fare in my hands. |

Think carefully before repricing for such a small savings. They cannot be used online. You will have to redeem the vouchers in person, which would mean an extra trip to the airport, possibly parking charges, as well as the $10 fee to ticket the new purchase you are using them against, as well as forgoing the 1,000 mile booking bonus for that new purchase. IMHO, it is not really cost effective to pursue a fare change less than $25. I had an interesting experience last month which shed some light on how this works. I am traveling next month SFO-PVR, but in order to put me over the top (50K) by the end of the year for 1P again, I decided to book SFO-ORD-DEN-PVR-SFO with a redeye going out. This was also advantageous because SFO-PVR service was not 7 days a week at the time I purchased the ticket). This would get me into Puerto Vallarta the day I needed to be there, gave me the 2K extra miles I needed, and only cost about $100 more than nonstops. Just for fun, weeks later I repriced my ticket and the cost went down $0.14 ! Presumably, this is some sort of exchange rate fluctuation on the taxes. However, I did another dummy booking of this exact itinerary and the price went down about $35! The reason is that repricing only looks at the exact same fare buckets you purchased regardless of whether there are cheaper ones available. This was confirmed by the CSR who dealt with issuing the voucher. But here's the good part!: As soon as she issued the voucher, it somehow opened up inventory in another fare bucket and the price dropped another $120! I called back less than 5 minutes later, and had quite a go-around with a new CSR and a supervisor. They both claimed that despite seeing what I was seeing online, there were no seats available in that class of service or any of the two or three classes higher. Regardless, I convinced them that they really should consult with the "Rate Desk" and issue me the voucher, which they did, and then they discovered that I had just called a few minutes prior, and actually congratulated me on this ^ They also confirmed that your repricing function online only looks at the exact itinerary with the exact same fare buckets for each segment. I always have great interactions with the HNL based 1P CSRs. Finally, I have always received all my vouchers within a week of calling...probably close to 20 in all. They do add up, which is how I was just able to go to Buenos Aires last week and only pay $200 roundtrip after applying my 2005 accumulated vouchers. :D |
