Us = Ua Lcc

I've been putting together a family trip from LA to PHL, which is of course a US hub. Pricing out flights on either ual.com, orbitz or expedia, it is utterly clear that if I am willing to subject myself to US metal, I can save $100 to $200 per ticket, as a UA codeshare. Indeed, the further I am willing to fly with US, the cheaper it is (with the exception of the LAX-PHL nonstop). For example, if I transfer through LAS, PHX or SFO, RT fares of US$200 come up, but if I go UA through DEN or ORD, it's about twice as much. Oddly enough, US itself doesn't quote such low fares - only the UA codeshares

What is really annoying is that it is practically impossible to get ual.com to give UA flights - everything is codeshare US. But the weaknesses of ual.com are far from news

We all complain about TED - but I'd much rather subject my brood to E+ in a nice new TED plane than US.

What would happen if you tried going on US's web site and booking the code shares for flights that are UA metal?

Hmm--I guess you give up any web site booking bonus. But I have seen several times both on US and UA web sites that their code share flights on each others metal are cheaper than their own planes...

I still haven't figured that out yet.

I suppose you would run the risk of having tickets with US in case there were a liquidation, but since the tickets are on UA metal, at least you'll know a plane will be flying to the destination that date.

US can't be considered a LCC of any sort given they have one of the industry's highest CASM's.

The more correct term here would be LFC - Low Fare Carrier. :)
