Upgrade with miles - wait listed segment question
I have upcoming travel LAX-ORD-MUC, MUC-IAD-LAX in late March. I was able to confirm upgrades with miles + copay on both segments outbound and on the first, TATL, on the return. The final segment, IAD-LAX, Sunday afternoon/evening, 777, V-fare, did not clear and I am wait listed. My colleague booked a few days earlier and cleared the upgrade on that segment.
I assume more seats will be released in the upcoming weeks, and I assume that since my colleague cleared with, I believe, the same fare class, I should have priority or be next in line for these seats. Will I be confirmed automatically if more seats are made available (assuming others don't subsequently buy higher fare class tickets)? Is it necessary or advisable to call on the phone to check on this? If so, how often? Once a week, for instance?
Also, will the copay be different whether or not this segment clears? (If they get the same copay either way, it seems that they have no "incentive" to upgrade me on the wait listed segment.)
I really want to clear so that I am as well-rested as possible when I operate on people's brains on the following days.
Any advice is helpful (or links to relevant threads that I was unable to find). Thanks.

The upgrade waitlist priority is status, fare class, time of request. Do you have the same status?
the same regardless ... the copay is based in USA-Europe and an extra USA segment does not add or subtract anything in miles or co-pay
