How do calculate breakage? When you use one domestically on a long domestic itin which clears well ahead of time, but the first flight gets cancelled (mechanical), putting you in AA E- with only 2 weeks left to use the SWU, so you use it on a short-haul just for the heck of it, a short haul that you would have likely cleared anyway, is that considered breakage?

I think it is.

It's the ratio of (how many SWUs expired from 1/1/2011 through yesterday) to (the total that you earned). If you used any for domestic flights treat those as expired. If you gave any away treat those as used.

100% for me, 6/6 expired
Family of 4 flying to Europe successfully used all 6. As the lucky one supplying the upgrades, I got to fly coach.

Earned 6, used 2, 4 expired. My travel pattern just didn't materialize as usually planned. Flew C on DL on two intl trips due to price, and a trip with Mr. GLR to GRU didn't materialize in time for expiration.

I would have only used them lately for C to F so I'm not too heartbroken.

0/10 SWUs expired in 2011:

DEN-ICN r/t (x2 passengers) (January 2011 travel with 2010 SWUs).
DEN-SIN r/t
DEN-DXB r/t
DEN-HKG r/t

I had one CR1 expire 2/1/12, but it was an orphan that came back into my account in Dec. due to IRROPS (kept the upgrade), so I felt like I had already used it anyway.
