Annual fee retention bonus for United MP Select Visa Card
Not sure if this has been covered recently - but just called for retention bonus against $95 annual fee - agent couldn't do - so I'm thinking of cancelling the card. Has anyone been successful? What steps did you take?

'Rentention bonus'? You don't mention your status - do you mean the 1K annual fee waiver? If so, and you aren't grandfathered in, you get $65 as a credit when you call Chase CS and say you're 1K and looking for the annual fee refund due to status with United.

If OP is asking about a way to get Chase to provide a bonus or fee reduction after the first year -- reported success has been spotty. As Clarkcc1 mentions 1Ks can get a partial (full for pre-Sept 2006 Plat card customers) fee waiver.
Appears the first move will be to downsize you to a less expensive card. Occasionally some have reported a few bonus miles. Most seem to report no success - as you report. Probably will depend on your annual spending and balance.
Might try to tell them on the phone to cancel the card and see if they transfer you to a "specialist" -- appears the specialist has more discretion.
Definitive appears to be a YMMV situation.

So related question, when do the 5K EQM post on this card?
Is it your anniversary date or is it tied to the yearly calendar?
Evidently I was misinformed. I was told today by Chase that the 5K EQM isn't anniversary related, but just 1 EQM for each dollar spent on UA.com up to 5,000 Dollars / EQM.
