Baggage allowance for elite companions

Sorry, I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I spent 20 minutes searching and found nil.

This indicates 3x @ 70 lbs for 1k member, 2x @ 50 lbs for people on same PNR.

Merge at will, those who have greater search capability and patience than me.

I can't get the second link to go to actual info, just the FAQ section. But everything else points to the first answer being correct (2x50 for companions).

Are there different oversized, overweight and excess baggage allowances for certain travelers?
Yes, Global ServicesSM customers, Mileage Plus® members with 1K® or Premier Executive® status, and customers with Star Alliance® Gold status are exempt from paying excess baggage fees for their third bag and are allowed to check baggage up to 70 pounds (32 kg) without paying overweight baggage fees. Companions traveling under the same confirmation number as these customers (up to eight companions per reservation) are exempt from the same fees.

In addition, U.S. military personnel (and/or dependents) who are either active or traveling on leave in conjunction with a permanent change of station (military ID required) are exempt from the fourth bag fee, may check baggage up to 115 linear inches (292 linear centimeters) without paying oversized baggage fees, and are allowed to check baggage up to 70 pounds (32 kg) without paying overweight baggage fees.

When doubted - go with the lowest - 2x @ 50 lbs

My understanding is that it's the first answer as has been mentioned.

Real-life experiance...

1K, travelling with non-status GM. LAS-ORD-LGA.
Only 2 bags for companion with 50lb limit. One of the bags was 65lb, the agent collected $100 as excess fee. Had to pay.

ps- this was back in March 2011

As a 1K - why wouldnt you claim the 'heavy bag' and give your companion the light bag so that you dont have to pay any fees? Am I missing something?

Unless he already had three bags that weighed 70 lbs.

Were you both on the same PNR?

I'm betting he didn't think about that and already tagged his bags before....so it was too late.

If 2pax have 4 bags >65 pounds, I'm not generating much sympathy.

Yes, I had 3 bags of 70lbs each with me. So another 2 bags with one 50 and 65lbs were the companion.

No sympathy is expected.

There was a time when 1K companions officially got the 1K allowance, although I never observed it actually granted. As of the most recent baggage policy update, it is 2x50 lbs for all companions on the same record.

Note that confirmed upgrades to business or first (even one segment in that direction) now raise the weight limit to 70 lbs for those passengers. So if you can get upgraded, you'll have 5 x 70 lbs.

I can say that not all UA baggage agents know these rules.

To clarify:

a) As a 1P, I get 3 bags of <70 pounds each?

b) My non-status companion on the same PNR gets 2 bags at <50 pounds each?

The outbound is on UA metal.

The return is on CO metal -- does that fact change anything for the return?
